An extract from the opera The Descent of Inanna by composer Jenni Roditi and librettist Lyn Gambles, originally commissioned by Lontano in 1990 the piece continues to have a life after twenty years having recently featured as the opening piece in the Grimeborn Festival at the Arcola Theatre in London. It is currently in the hands of an American presenter/producer who is committed to promoting the piece in the USA.
The story of Inanna comes from the ancient Sumerian culture circa 2500 BC, the cradle of civilization. Inanna is ruler of her people, woman of the world, in tune with nature and her body and looking for the meaning of life.
She is called to the Netherworld where she encounters her terrifying dark sister and the demons who live with her. In this extract Inanna, in a rage on her return from the Netherworld commands that the demons take her husband to replace her! Dumuzi runs through the desert to escape, but is captured. His sister, the pure Geshtinanna intervenes and offers to go in his place. Inanna declares - if you love each other so - share the sentence - six months each. And thus were the seasons born, so the story goes.
