The whole video is one consistent scene in 3dsmax, no cuts, no tricks, all one shot.
It's actually all 3D, but the camera is far away and has a really narrow lens which creates the illusion of a 2D world.

The Main Inspiration was the Music itself. I started to draw the worlds on paper first and then created the camera ride and added all the actions. Most of them are automatically triggered when the camera comes close to them. This allowed me to tweak the timing once all the world was done.
