Mike Whitney - the former Test cricketer turned TV personality recently spent a couple of days driving around the NSW South Coast (Grand Pacific Drive) in a convoy of five red Ferraris powered by Shell V-Power, and he got more than envious glances.
"We stopped the traffic", he says. "Guys were jumping out of their cars and shouting on their mobile phones".
At the time, Mike was filming a segment for his Channel 7 ‘Sydney Weekender’ show about Ferrari Drive Experiences provided by Prancing Horse in Sydney.
It’s an arrangement where couples can drive 4 different models of Ferrari for one or two days for travel in convoy out of Sydney to the South Coast via the Royal National Park and the landmark Sea Cliff Bridge (as seen on that epic Shell V-Power TVC with Ferrari).
Each person gets to drive four different Ferrari models, changing over at various points along the route.
A one-day trip costs $990 per person and an overnight excursion, including dinner, bed and breakfast at an upmarket property, lunches, day-spa and massage plus some other decadent extras, sells at $2980 per couple.
It’s been a hugely successful exercise to date. Prancing Horse says wives have been just about lining up to buy trips for their husbands, and shortly before Christmas the drive-days have been booked out for up to 3 months!
Mike Whitney says he knows why.
"If you’re into cars, this has got to be realising the great boyhood fantasy", he says.
"You see a top car like a Ferrari and you say to yourself ‘I would love to just sit in one of those’.
"It’s a name that conjures up thoughts of great things. It’s synonymous with a lavish lifestyle.
"I could never afford to buy one, but for a $1000 I can get to drive four! If you’re into great cars, it’s worth every cent".
"I'm going to give this the BIG TICK! This has been a landmark day in all of my years on Sydney Weekender - a fair dinkum dream come true!"
