Phonovideo is a VJ tool or visual instrument used to display animations in an analog way without the help of a computer. "Stuck in a Groove" is the first film made with this technique, it serves also as a demo for the technique .
In the future phonovideo should be used for live performances in cooperations with musicians, performancers and other artists.
The music for "Stuck in a Groove" was created by Richard Eigner/ Ritornell and is also contained on the album Ritornell - Golden Solitude (karaoke kalk cd 47 / lp 52)

This is really well done and I love the fact it's analog!

No word of a lie, I was developing my own version of this based on the Praxinoscope as part of my end of year project at university.

Thankfully I have a plan B, just in case it had been done before. Keep up the good work :)
  • Clemens Kogler 1 year ago
Thanks. I initially also played around with the thought of using some sort of praxinoscope but I layed down the idea after a while because it seemed too complicated. Would love to see something build with a praxinoscope though. ( but I'm also curious about your plan b )
  • Rob Francis plus 1 year ago
haha my "plan B" is a bit complicated to explain in words. I will let you know when it's up online!

I love it all. Awesome job. Saw it on Motionographer. The tone and sound of the voice over meshed perfectly with this to give that almost twilight zone intro feel.

how did you make the prints?
  • Clemens Kogler 1 year ago
hard to explain in a short comment. I mainly used Animation Software to make short 2second Animation and composed the single frames in a circle. That's the basic principle for most of the prints.

That is amazing. I find it slightly dishonest, though. The whole "analog" thing. That "analog" set was the culmination of hundreds of hours of computer image editing and digital printing onto those records. The only thing analog about it is the motor of the turntable and maybe, maybe the NTSC video signal. Even the frame rate of the camera is an artifact of a digital CMOS sensor. :P

this is not the first video chuu VJ started working with this in 2005 youtube.com/watch?v=YSMwaLJJ7g8&feature=player_embedded

there are a lot of people who made turntable based animations. Most notably probably the work of jim le fevre.

The thing which is unique to this video that I used 2 turntables and a videomixer to create the video live in one take without editing it later on.

    Is a really nice video.
Your tool is just an old phonoscope?
In that case I wished you called: rediscovering the wheel!

    I liked the speech.
