I recently shot some footage of my daughter during one of her swimming lessons. After putting together the standard "home movie" for family consumption [ vimeo.com/1108825 ], I decided to challenge myself with a little experiment: Could I transform fun ordinary footage into something dark and moody? I selected some music, did some experimental editing, and this is what I came up with.

The footage was shot using a Canon HV30 with no additional lenses or adapters. It was edited with a combination of Adobe After Effects and Premiere CS3. I used Magic Bullet for color correction.

Thanks, James! Took what seemed like forever to edit this thing. Glad someone (other than myself) enjoyed it. :-)

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dark and Moody!! My favorite :)
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
Of course you would like dark and moody. You're definitely the master of that. Come to think of it, I probably should've watched your videos as inspiration before starting work on this one. Oh well... next time!

Want to make it even creepier? Record some of your daughter talking, then play it backwards with some echo mixed below the music. that always gives me the heebie-jeebies. Nicely done!
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
Oh man! What a great idea! You're definitely onto something there. Horror movies with kids always freak me out the most. Ringu, The Shining and Pet Semetery come to mind.

  • A nice look at swimming :) What's the music from? Dark City? 300?

Haha I always loved your editing, you have great timing! Good job!
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
Thanks a bunch for your comment, Xerxes. The funny thing is, I think the timing is off just a bit on the streaming version. If you have a chance, download the source file. I believe the timing is more accurate.

Really great piece of horror work. Editeing is great and sound match perfectly. I have to look at standard family to make sure it was fun not a "lesson from hell" Once again - great Job.
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
Hahaha! Nah... it wasn't a lesson from hell, but I do find the instructor to be a little scary looking. But that's irrelevant. :-P

Thanks, Rommel. I'm still a big n00b when it comes to AE. But I'm trying to learn the ropes.

Working my way through all your stuff and got to say its very good! You obviously enjoy making these movies and it shows!
  • Clan McCloud plus 1 year ago
Working your way through ALL my stuff? Whoa! I'm honored! :-) Thanks for watching. I really do enjoy the creation process. I haven't produced anything in a while, but I haven't disappeared. There's still plenty of things up in my noggin that needs shooting.

Amazing how a story can be completely twisted from the original version. The swim teacher's mood definately did it justice.
  • Clan McCloud plus 6 months ago
I know! The look on that swim teacher 's face gives me nightmares! Hahaha. Thanks for the comment.
