Can't wait to see this since my Letus will be here in a couple days, whoot! Hoping this vid will also give tips on setting it up since, as of yet, I'm clueless. Guess I'm going to have to wait till it's done uploading to find out.

Thanks for this one regardless, I'm sure it'll give some insight.

prop up that blue screen again.
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
Can't believe I am getting comments on this whilst it is still uploading!!

It isn't an advanced Letus course. It is more for people who don't have a clue what it is, how it works or why I wear Mr. Men T-shirts in all my videos.

Best thing about it is I have shot the same scene simultaneously with two ex1s. One with an extreme and one without and split screened the results to show you the difference.
  • Underground Planet 3 months ago
Sounds like an advanced course is in order. Or at least basic set up. =)

    That would kina sorta rule.

So just had time to watch it, even more giddy now. Thanks for puttin it up and sharing your experience man.

did you test also SGpro ??? What is you opinion of SGpro ??
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
No this is a video about the Letus Extreme. I don't have an SGpro, only used one briefly for a few hours 18 months ago.

Nice. I had no idea there was a European reseller. Doesn't seem to be cheaper than buying from the US, though... but very close.
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
yeah, its more expensive but i guess it kinda works out as you have no huge shipping or import charges and much more importantly it it goes wrong you can get it fixed quickly on site. That alone will save me some cash over the years!

Is the colour cast in the two ex1 shots justa product of not balencing, or does the letus induce a cast, ikt seems overall warm. Also most of your shots shown are overcranked, maybe 60- 120 fps is that a range that works with the letus or are you inducing slo mo in editing.

cool to see it, its what I want so now I will have to save up innit
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
The letus doesn't produce a cast. It's two differently set up ex1s with different PP settings. Did some colour correction but not enough.

You can only overcrank to 60fps with the ex1. All the stuff in the video is overcrank, not done in post
  • 3d60 3 months ago
thought as much....good series will eagerly wait for next endorsement.

  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
done a version with better colour correction

Great video - I totally agree, the Letus is fantastic.
Just to make sure I understood correctly: You ment that I shouldn't open my camerea wider than 5.6, right?
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
I think I am am going to have to re record that!

No, its the lens cannot be stopped down past f5.6

the camera you can do what you want!
  •
  • Enozez 3 months ago
do you have any idea that how much cam and lens all costs that you been recording all the stuffs in that video ?
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
all the stuff? all three cameras or just for a short film?
  • Enozez 3 months ago
nope the lexus you introduced with lens you using.
how much all cost to you.
    > thats what i tried to say =)

  • UKAT 3 months ago
wow ... man. Cool pics and very informative. Not sure if you are able to answer ... but I am considering the Brevis35 .... between the two units, in easy and speedy to set up and shoot ... which do you recommend?
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
it really depends on which camera. But the Letus setup is ultra quick and has the built in flip
  •
  • Ben Millett 3 months ago
Really informative. The difference is amazing.
  •
  • Blue Tree Productions 3 months ago
What happens when you step the lens further down than 5.6?
Of course the depth of field gets deeper, but are there any other effects? (Besides the fact that you lose a LOT of light)
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
yes you see the pattern of the glass that i mention in the video. Be really careful if you are not using a monitor. It may look ok in the viewfinder but it wont be!
  • Blue Tree Productions 3 months ago
    got it

    thank you
  • Underground Planet 3 months ago
Along this line, would you say the EX1's lcd is at least adequate for seeing the pattern of the glass?
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
only if you are really careful and look for it. I get caught out again and again by forgetting to check my f-stop and only notice when I get home as I don't use a monitor for my little shorts.
  •
  • UKAT 3 months ago
I have the EX1. Im sensing I should stick to my original choice of LETUS. Guess the image results is much for much and depends on the glass one uses? The Brevis35 offer a interchangeable DIFFUSER filter to increase the bokeh and I thought that could come in handy if you dont have a very fast lens.

    Cool bro. Chur.

  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
Problem with the Brevis is CF1 isn't linear with the iris, it vignettes instead of reducing light. The CF2 is much better and has a lovely image. The CF3 has a nice Bokeh but you can only use it with lenses at f1.4 otherwise you see grain.

Great promo for the Letus, Philip.
As a great admirer of your work, you did already convince me before his promo. Just saving up some money for now.
Just a question, is the setup for a Z1 difficult. I heared it's quite critical. Will it achieve the expected results?
Thank you for sharing your experience.
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
Hi Pierre. I used it for my Autumn in Richmond short and it worked really well. No problems at all
  • Pierre 3 months ago
Thnx for the info Philip. Is the L. Ultimate also to be considered?
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
it is far superior. Depends if you can afford it or not!
  •
  • Rick Horton 3 months ago
I actually think that " maybe " the depth of field was a little TOO shallow between the 2 examples.
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
It isn't an on or off. You can change the DOF, I made it wide open to show the difference very clearly.

  • Rick Horton 3 months ago
Oh, I know. Its just so out of focus in the background that it looks like a blue-screen shot. Like you are too removed from the background. Do you know what I mean? It might actually turn a few people away. Perhaps not, but when I saw it I was like WOAH, that's a bit too much for that particular example. Maybe it's because the setting is so bland. Nothing pops but you, and the background looks out of place. If I saw this as my only example, I would have been turned off, but my first example of the Letus I ever saw was My Autumns Done Come, and it led me to your other totally amazing and inspiring videos. It feels like blasphemy telling you that I don't think the example is right, but I love your work so much.
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
Sure, but I have shot talking heads with way softer backgrounds than that on 2/3rd inch Betacams. Very easy to do, just be quite far away from person and them with enough separation from the background.

I wanted to take an ordinary background that looks quite messy and distracting in the original and make it look attractive.

You have blasphemed. You are going to hell.
  • Rick Horton 3 months ago
    Haha! Good show!

now look here...mr man devotee.... yhea.
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
wait until you see my mr men t shirt for my Z7 review!
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
oh and anyone who agrees with Rick also has blasphemed and will be forever doomed to shoot with 1/4 inch chips when everything is ALWAYS in focus FOREVER!! HA HA HA HA (evil laugh type thing)
  •
  • Greg Wallis 3 months ago
NOW I understand exactly what it can do. It's only because you showed the two in split screen that I really see how much difference there is, and just how "digital" the straight cam footage is. Thanks for this, it's a definite eye-opener.
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
I could easily make the EX1 footage look a hell of a lot better with PP settings, being much further away and zooming in. But the point is these cameras are at the same distance. If I had the Letus further away it could obviously be much more shallow if I wanted it to be. Not ideal for talking heads though. Me bobbing my head back and forth would be a focus nightmare on crazy shallow DOF

I'm curious - why does this Letus require battery power? And don't tell me it's for the flux capacitor!
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
i didn't go into too much tech detail but for the glass to have an image on it it has to be finely ground so it is translucent (hence ground glass) for the grain of that glass to be invisible a small motor vibrates it. hence the power. Am pretty sure the flux capacitor needed SLIGHTLY more than 2 aa batteries!!
  • Xan Bonneau 3 months ago
Interesting... I'm shocked I don't see any negative side effects from that vibration.

I'm currently only editing, but in two weeks I'm taking up a new position that will allow my to edit AND shoot. I think you've single-handedly converted me from going with the hdx 200 to the ex1/ex3 instead. I hope Sony gives you a kickback!

    You rock man!
I just returned from HD Expo in Chicago, met a DP from the show 60 minutes with Dan Rather at the Sony panel and he said he just used the Letus Ultimate in the Galapagos Islands and had consulted with you. You are the man Philip!
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
    Thanks, was that Dennis Dillon?
  • Daniel Hidalgo 3 months ago
Yes, that is him. I could not remember his last name until you said it, Dennis was a fantastic person and so informative about shooting and discussing traveling for photojournalism. Very much appreciated his perspective, and his confidence in the Letus Ultimate.

Great work! Watching this really helped a lot, especially now that I am about to purchase a letus. Any difference between the Letus Extreme and the optimized version you talk about in the video? Also, Have you worked with the Canon XH-A1? Any thoughts on that?
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
its purely the achromat that is optimised to those two cameras. Never worked with the Canon.

  • Hampus Byström 3 months ago
Yeah cheers for this. Tough I still think (much to my production wallets demise) that film is way better than digital. I'm not a fundamentalist and would love digital to beat film, but it still can't be done. Not even with the RED camera. The digital can achieve a whole nother look, but it's not film-like. I think Philips shots are great, but they don't give you that warm and fuzzy feeling that film does.
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
its not supposed to replace film. What it is doing is giving film makers an incredibly cheap option to get a film look.

I am using a £4000 camera and a £600 adaptor with cheap lenses.
  • Hampus Byström 3 months ago
Yes I know, and personally I really like this "look" but I wouldn't call it a film-look. It's a way to make the digital look has it's on unique quality and texture. But I digress...

It's a great little tool and I agree with you that it has really helped alot low-budget films to achieve a nice, stylized look.
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
But that is why I call it a "film look" if I said "makes it look like film" then you could definitely beat me over the head with a panavision clapper!

    Hey Philip,

im looking into "maybe" getting a Letus for my HV20. Do you recommend this option being I want 2 do my own short films, commercials, etc. or opt for a better cam. I currently have a DIY 35MM adapter which I do like but with the above is a total difference. It is costly but seems to be worth it especially if the work results in what is intended. Im in the US and this lens is actually more than my cam, but that would make the cam seem like it was a more expensive piece of gear. Please reply with your thoughts. Im kinda new and I use FCP and Im more wanting to become an editor.

    thnks n advance.
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
i would recommend getting a better camera first. But an hV20 and Letus do work very well together but it is a very fiddly combination. Great results. But hard to achieve.
  • phanatik 3 months ago
which cam do u recommend as the step up after HV20 with a reasonable price tag?
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
depends on what your budget is really. A decent HDV camera isn't cheap
  • Hampus Byström 3 months ago
A step-up from HV20 would probably be Xh A1. I mean look at this footage: vimeo.com/712895

    Looks great with a Letus!

You could get a Xh-A1 for 3.219 USD now adays. Probably even more cheaper on eBay.

What is a "backyard" Ray? You mean my garden? :-)

85mm f1.4 Zeiss. Sorry didn't reply to your last email. Really tight spaces get something like an 18mm sigma f2

The letus seems to be vignetting quite a bit - and not just at the edges either.

If you look closely at the shots, the middle part of the screen is the brightest. From there, there is a slow gradation to a darker shade towards the edges.

It's especially visible in the shots of the sky and clouds.
And looking closely you'll see it present in every shot.

Doesn't this bother anyone else? It's like a mild case of tunnel vision.

I do use this effect (which I add in post) every now and then when I want that 'vignette' effect to pull the viewer's focus to the center of the frame.

Although I would not like to be stuck with this all the time. And as to what I'm seeing so far with most of the Letus assisted shots - it is what you'll be stuck with.

My theory is it has to do with the projection of the lens onto the GG, and the light not falling evenly across the frame, with the center of the GG collecting most of the light - much like a magnifying glass under the sun.

Isn't it possible to get the light/exposure levels constant across the whole frame with the letus?

It isn't so noticeable - but it's there.

Or maybe I'm just seeing things.

Oh btw, this is not to take anything away from Philip or his imager which is beautiful.

Philip is indeed a great asset to our community. Keep up the fantastic work mate.
  • Philip Bloom 2 months ago
Hey Mark. You only get Vignetting if you don't zoom in enough. Actually most the shots in this have post vignette, the only time it is optical is if I need an extra bit on the wide. Very little of Alone in Tokyo, Shibuya and Southend have the post vignette.

    Thank for comments though!

    Phil

1 question...what will happen if u shoot, and the motor inside the adapter doesnt work\isnt turned on?
what will u see then? :\
  • Philip Bloom 2 months ago
    a nasty pattern!!
  • eladbari 2 months ago
hehe..what is the exact function of this motor? i thought to shake off dust and stuff :\
  • Philip Bloom 2 months ago
its design is to vibrate fast enough to make the nasty pattern disappear. Dust is the devil to the Letus Extreme and all vibrating adaptors.

I think you need to look at my other work, been using an Ultimate since April!
  • pelicula inc. 29 days ago
    thanks for pointing that out.

i have a couple of questions for you.

    1. can you attach hasselblad lenses? (i found a site that sells a hasselblad to PL mount converter) would that work?

    2. how much light loss is there, really? if you're used to shooting interiors at 2.8, what would you have to light to with the ultimate (4, 5.6???)?

thanks. i love your videos by the way, they're very helpful. i had actually seen your diving video on the letus website, didn't realize it was yours. beautiful stuff.
