78. beta-testing the steadicam zephyr // first flight + bts
1 year ago
we've tried the merlin, pilot, flyer, and now the zephyr. across the line, the zephyr has got to be the easiest to setup, the most versatile unit to adjust in the field, the smoothest balanced, and a whole lotta fun.

just to demonstrate how much fun it is, at the end of this clip we tried no hands operating and we were all so surprised with how smooth those shots came out.

there is a disclaimer on this clip - it was super windy while we were shooting but we didn't have another time to shoot, so we made the best of it. if you like these results, i imagine i could have gotten more out of it had the wind not been so strong.

i often fly the flyer with a canon 7d and a 14mm rectilinear. the 14mm has a very short hyperfocal distance, so it is great for moving shots and keeping everyting in focus, and i love the look of the distortion versus a 16-35. on a 7d, with the crop, it isn't too too wide either, which is perfect. around the camera there is a cinevate cage and mattebox, used to provide protection for the camera, lets you rest the unit upside down (if you don't have a stand) and add some extra weight. the zephyr test featured the same configuration to really see how it would compare.

a couple big improvements to the zephyr for those of us who are dSLR shooters;
// the gimbal handle now offers tool-less adjustment.
// the gimbal handle also has straight edges on on opposing sides (which is part of the tango compatibility) and when using the zephyr alone allows you to feel where straight is
// the stage and base of the sled have a ton more power options (not something that a dSLR shooter will take as much advantage of unless you get into adding follow focus units and such)
// the biggest plus, and why i want a zephyr so much, is how the base of the sled accepts the same weights as the merlin and how it now adjusts. the post that holds the monitor and a second one that holds the battery can be unlocked and slid fore and aft, which allows you to quickly and easily achieve dynamic balance like never before on a rig this size. by adding the weights to the base i can make the rig heavier (more inertia, my personal preference for operating).

being that we are shooting dSLR, we only have one monitor live at a time, so we have to choose the one on the sled or the LCD on the camera. i choose the camera LCD (much to tiffen's dismay due to proper operating procedure) but when shooting live events i find it easier to check focus and see what is about to happen when i am looking up. it certainly does make it a challenge and you need to feel the rig more when you can't see the LCD (which you will see in some shots in the clip).

with these weights on the bottom, if you also choose to use the dSLR LCD, you could get away by removing the monitor as well as the battery plate and using just the weights as your counter balance. what that means is potentially tiffen could release a dSLR version without these components and sell it for less. i'm going to pitch that to them, but who knows if that will want to go that route as they strongly advise using the monitor on the sled when operating.

as of now, the zephyr would be my unit of choice. no MSRP has been announced and i don't have any indication where it will end up, though after using it i would have to assume it would be above the flyer and below the archer.

this test footage included about 10 minutes of setup out of the box. thanks to tiffen for letting me borrow one of the two units in existence to do some testing. this is footage from the first flight.

thanks to the rayjoyce team for acting as both a model and providing bts coverage for me.

    Awesome, how much doesit cost?
For an heavy camera will be a good choice?
  • stillmotion pro 1 year ago
being a beta unit, no pricing will be decided until the design is finalized. i am not sure weight limits on this one, but i think it will be up to about 20lbs.

Thanks for the thorough review. I haven't actually had a chance to really dive into shooting with a steadicam. I was finally able to test one at NAB this year (Glide-cam anyway) and it completely opened my eyes to the benefits of shooting with a rig like that. Definitely takes some getting used to. This, especially after reading your review, has definitely made me realize that I need look into finally getting one. Do you guys know of any shops that let you rent out a rig as well? Just curious. :)

P.S. Congrats on the badass NFL vignette. ;)
  • stillmotion pro 1 year ago
thank you for the NFL love.

not many places rent them, and when they do they are often $250 plus a day, so the price as a camera rental. if your ever in TO we can let you try out one of our extra units.

try the big rental shops if your interested though.

I figured as much. I'll definitely drop in if I'm ever in TO. :)

That looks like one super sexy bit of kit but no doubt going to be well out of our league. Still, gives me something new to stick on the "If I win the lottery" list :)
  • stillmotion pro 1 year ago
we may be surprised and it will be more accessible than e think. hard to say now, but the fact that they don't have an MSRP range to me says that it could be closer to the flyer which would be awesome.

Very cool stuff. It is neat to see the operator moving and the resulting shots.

Is that the convention center in Seattle?

    thanks mark. that's me :)

yep, we are at the edgewater in seattle and walked down the street until we found some good test locations.

Thanks P. I totally hear you on the DSLR version. I'm sure they could reduce the price of that system 30-40% by ditching the batteries and monitor. Its frustrating thinking that you're putting such expensive counter weights on there. I do get the safety thing and watching your feet but there isn't really a good option right now for DSLR shooters being that HQ output options are so poor.

I can totally see the advantage of the sliding posts at the base, and the tool-less gimbal. The shaped grip handle is simple but makes total sense.

That said, it might be the time to buy a used Flyer LE.
  • stillmotion pro 1 year ago
i may just have a used flyer LE for you :)

i doubt the battery mount would remove 30-40% but i could see 10% perhaps. i first have to convince them to actually go for that idea though.

    P.
  • Michael Duval plus 1 year ago
Seriously...let me know about the Flyer if you go that way.

You don't think the batteries & monitor account for 30% of the cost of a rig? Imagine a bare bones Flyer with Pilot style weights on either end and no electronics. Kinda like a glidecam 2000 with steadicam flyer build quality. Keep hammering Tiffen on that idea. Considering what Garrett keeps coming up with I sure the result would be interesting.
  •
  • Firewerkz Films plus 1 year ago
that looks really sexy!! What is the weight of the unit? Is it heavier than the Flyer LE?
  • stillmotion pro 1 year ago
the unit itself is similar in weight to a fly LE. i used all the weights i could get on the bottom (but no battery) and it was a little heavier than the flyer. i would ideally have some more weights on the top with their new accessory mount for weights and then add two batteries to the bottom and get another 5lbs or so on it.

Thanks for the demo. I didn't get a chance to try it on at NAB this year. Guess I was too memorized by the new Tango. Have you tried that one yet?
  • stillmotion pro 1 year ago
nope, couldn't get my hands on a tango. a little much for us and our events anyways, but it looks like it would be a blast to try.

    P.
  • Bill Strehl 1 year ago
I didn't realize it but the Tango is an accessory for the Zephyr. I assumed the Zephyr was a shipping product when I talked to Jerry and Garrett at NAB, but I see it isn't. Have you heard when it is expected to be on the market?

How does this compare to a Glidecam HD 4000 with the X-10 dual arm support?
  • stillmotion pro 1 year ago
to me, it doesn't. the ease of setup and use, the ergonomics, the control in the arm, the ability to get such a precise dynamic balance so quickly - are all things offered by the zephyr.

the glidecam is a low cost starter rig, or dare i say knock-off. to each their own, you need to try it for yourself and see what fits, but i can say i have known dozens who started glidecam and grew into full steadicam rigs, i have never known or even heard of somebody going the other way (steadi to glide).

I have to say I'm upset that there was a change in shoes however.

did both cam's have the 14mm lens or the one on the zephyr? if not what did the BTS cam have for a lens? it didn't seem tooooo far off.. or maybe i should watch it again..

I'm wanting to get a rectilinear lens and like the look of this..
  • stillmotion pro 1 year ago
only the steadicam had a 14mm on it. the bts was mostly 35mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.2 on a MKIV.

when you using 7d on sreadicam you use 14mm lens only?
  • stillmotion pro 1 year ago
not only the 14, but mostly the 14. we shot the last wedding at chelsea pier in new york and i flew the 35 on a 7d to get a little tighter as everything happened in the same place so i wanted to keep the shots tighter.

check out the pilot, roughly $3350 with the AA battery mount.

I think your demo has motivated thousands of us to purchase the Zephyr. I already have a Glidecam X45 which is great for larger setups, but a nice light rig like this will compliment my 5D just right. Thanks for the inspirational video and very nice flying!

I have been using the pilot at events and I am beat by end of day (I am in shape too) and find it cumbersome for run and gun. Do you think the Merlin/vest would be a better choice for some b roll? BTW, I disagree with imagine Film, I thought the color had character, nice vintage feel.
  •

You shot this at 1000 shutter and did not have the strobe effect, why is that?
  •
  • ian9outof10 1 year ago
This Steadicam is going to be incredible when it launches. I'm trying to work out how to buy a Pilot at the moment, but I don't have a good excuse other than "I want".

This rig, I would expect, will come in at more than the Flyer LE does. Although I'm no expert, and could be very wrong!
  •
  • chris tangey plus 1 year ago
Based on this video, I've just bought one for delivery in Australia end of October 2010. US retail is $9000 for the kit and Tiffen have made some adjustments including a Zephyr purpose-designed vest (instead of an existing one) and they are upping the total load to 11kg from the original 9kg spec.

For someone entirely new to the stabilization game, would you recommend starting out with the Glidecam and moving up to steadicam, or would you go straight for the steadicam like the pilot? thanks!
  •
  • krdzle 1 year ago
Great test video. Would love to get a stabilizer if I could afford one. Question though, how did you obtain hyperfocal distance on the 7D? I'm using a tokina 11-16. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Dave Wowchuk plus 1 year ago
Hi Patrick. Did you guys end up buying one?

And did you ever check out the HD monitor for the Zephyr? I've been looking everywhere, and no one seems to have any photos of the HD/SD-SDI monitor. I'm considering the Zephyr as my smaller rig, instead of flying a "weighted-up" 5Dm2 on my full-sized.
