Shot with the JVC GZ HD7, this is another styling exercise for the forthcoming film PEARL. The grey smoke of incense sticks catching the sunlight with the camera on a tungsten light white balance setting causing the smoke to be a rather attractive shade of blue, This was then recoloured in FCP to be this fiery bronze colour.
Manual Aperture Priority setting, F2 zoomed in to about x4.

Slowed to 30% motion and with titles overlayed in Trajan Pro. In retrospect, a faster shutter speed would have made a smoother slow motion effect I think.

Music is for position only and not intended for the finished project.

Neat trick on the Tungsten setting. I might have to use it soon. I actually saw your post on dvinfo about those dead pixel you had with the cam. I had the same experience on a unit I bought from US, but later had it 'serviced' here in Holland. Thanks to 4 yr MACK warranty. It still gets just as warm as when I had it originally though. Curious what software update you had done in yours.

No Idea about what the software update was, It didn't say on the slip from JVC, just that they'd done an update. Anyway, no sign of the white dot again so that's fair enough. Just had a look at the camera to see if I could find a number anywhere but there's nothing I can see. I presume yours has been fine since your service?
  • Just reading your comments above guys ... I've had no problems with mine - it doesn't even get hot (UK Model)

I've had no software update either - unless it was already up-to-date when I bought it ... though I've had no problems I'm kind of worried now.

  • Btw, the film is awesome ... you've turned simple smoke into something quite beautiful ... again you've inspired me Wayne :-)

Don't be worried Chris. From what I've read on the Video Information Network forum when I asked others about it, there were only three of us had any problems. That's not a design fault, just one of those glitches that happen to some people. Unfortunately one of them was me.

The camera only gets hot when you start filming and let it run for ages on one thing, as I have to do sometimes for clients.

I was out last night filming sunsets and the camera wasn't even warm by the end. - Outside and short clips, you see.

Thanks for the comments also, it seems we all inspire each other here, which is great, and which is why I was out filming the sunset last night!

Oh and thanks for adding me to the Masterclass, brilliant to think you thought it was worth including Cheers!

Cheers Greg, much appreciated. It came out well I thought. Just a little messing about and learning in FCP. messing with colours kind of thing.

I might agree with your remark regarding a faster shutter speed, but it looks great regardless.

Aye, I know, but in my defence, I'd only had my first ever video camera a couple of months when I did this… Still learning learning learning.

    Thanks Panic,
