A visualisation of the northern European airspace returning to use after being closed due to volcanic ash. Due to varying ash density across Europe, the first flights can be seen in some areas on the 18th and by the 20th everywhere is open.

The flight data is courtesy of flightradar24.com and covers a large fraction of Europe. There are a few gaps (most noticeably France) and no coverage over the Atlantic, but the picture is still clear.

The map data is CC-by-SA openstreetmap.org and contributors.

This CC-by-SA visualisation was produced by itoworld.com with support from ideasintransit.org

UPDATE: New 1080p version with different view, more data, and CO2 burn rates: vimeo.com/11739091

Fantastic view of the pause and 'reboot' due to that volcano. The sky was completely clear over the East Midlands of England where I live and shot video of the sky as this was a unique event. This morning (27-04) was very still and the clear sky was covered in dozens spreading chemtrails lowering the light levels by 15% according to an old light meter.
I get the feeling that this isn't sustainable in the long run and it will be back to sailing ships to get about.

very cool. what's up with the circular patterns that show up a couple times (near Ireland at about 35 seconds)?

Probably waiting to land. You know, "folks, we're waiting for permission to land, so we'll be circling for about 8 hours"

I think it was the test flights either by the private flight companies or the military, testing if it would be safe to open the airspace. Greatest possibility, I think.

It's over shannon, which is where most planes from the US would have had to land

This was just before the UK airports opened again, BA hedged their bets and sent flights on their way and at one point they were holding off every corner of the UK and Ireland before LHR & LGW were finally given the green light.

We understand that data is picked up by VHF receivers operated by volunteers around the world from transmissions from planes. Unfortunately there is not global coverage yet - FlightRadar24 need some more volunteers to fill in the blank areas including parts of France, Spain, Germany, southern Italy and Greece. If you are in one of those countries and want to fill in the gap then check out this page:

I love this visualisation - very stylish and effective. What did you use to produce this? I would love to get my hands on your code ;o)
