I guess, this was shot on film camera, and editing program was AAE ? tell us

the short of it is that we're using DSLRs to capture at different exposure values. More details, and what will hopefully be the first short ever shot entirely in HDR, to come soon

you have to hurry, RED's new cameras will have HDR integrated.

This looks like a stereo rig in zero position. Also the cameras are out of sync in sub frame timing. Not really the world's first too. But nice anyway.

    Hater!!!!

    nope.

what videos do you make ariel?

  • Jeremy Guetta 1 year ago
How did you align the different optical lens in the same axis ?
  • Soviet Montage 1 year ago
Beamsplitter rig, built with blood and tears and aluminum strut.

Almost looks animated to me. very cool

    Excellent, however you did it.
    (Two way mirror perhaps?)

I'd love to see a picture of the rig!

Yeah man, post some pictures of the rig. Great work!

Someone kinda did this November 2009 with lucis art. I'm aware they didn't use 2 cameras with different exposers but I'd still consider it to be the first attempted "hdr" video.

  • Why not simply use this method with one camera only...

    labs.adobe.com/technologies/cinemadng/

HDR from one Cinema Raw source.

Nice work but a little to soft for my taste.
Please try doing an Edgy, Industrial "sharp" look.
  • 413 Studios plus 10 months ago
yeah they're just going to go out and do an edgy, industrial "sharp" look now that you said it. It took them months to do it.

Interesting. How did you linked the cameras?
  •
  • bob fately 1 year ago
Say, do you think Panasonic would make a version of their AG3DA1 stereo camera with a single lens assembly but keeping the dual CCDs so one could be set +2 and the other -2 stops? That could be the ideal unit to make the raw video.
Question - what kind of processing time per minute of video shot is required?

Certainly not the first HDR video. Search for
"HDR test with a Red cam 3d rig"
    here on vimeo.

FYI that video was posted a few weeks after this one.

For kicks, I HAD to try simulating the effect with one camera and Photoshop.

  • Loved the video. It looked more real than real life, and somehow still looked like a graphic novel. As others have asked before me: How was this done?

There are several methods to create HDR video. But I think the use of the two 5Ds here is what sets these short clips apart for the Soviet Montage guys. Splitting the image and with the +2, -2 stops really brings this impact home on the 5Ds. I have a feature length script whose genre would benefit greatly from this technique in key scenes. I will be shooting a trailer to create some buzz for the film and am determined to do the trailer with the dual 5D method. We are working on a rig right now.
  • David Jeter 1 year ago
Jim, we're working on building a similar rig. Getting the engineering ironed out on the frame right now. When it's done it will be used in a few projects that the funding production company is tied to, but I will likely either build more or make the 1st one available soon after. We're in the Dallas area.

How do you merge the two clips ( whats the rig) Mirrors

I do believe that you are a pioneer.. nice work.. love the method, very creative. I look forward to see where this takes you.
  •
  • Fantastic footage.

BUT — this is not TRUE HDR, since basically you're combining two simultaneously recorded compressed takes. When compared to the world of stills this is the same as creating an HDR from bracketed JPEGs. Therefore, it's FAUX HDR. Until Canon allows us to bypass the encoder and record in RAW mode directly, only RED is likely to offer TRUE HDR with their new HDRx technology.

    hey guys,
thats awesome. is there a possibility to output the file in a hdr format with a RGB + light channel? i mean like the photo *.hdr format has? (without tonemapping) because i think MOVING hdr footage would or will be pretty interesting für image based lighting (3d rendering)

  •
  • 413 Studios plus 10 months ago
great work. this is interesting because you could make it look unreal for a graphic novel type video.

    Lemme see something to try...:

    1- shot the sequence.
2- export frames to singles frames using After Effects, naming by eg. shot.jpg (you can use .tif).
3- Batch process the single frames in photoshop with -2ev and save frames shot-2.jpg
4- Batch process the single frames in photoshop with +2ev and save frames shot2.jpg
5- Join the 3 frames (shot.jpg + shot-2.jpg + shot2.jpg in Photomatix. First make a new profile in Photomatix like you want, them use the batch process with this profile.
6- Leave the machine work. Time to coffee.
7- Join the frames in After Effects or FCP at the same frame rate you shot.

Obs. The frames exported are automatically incremented number in After Effects.

    Done!
