I have had a few other students ask about the shaders in my demoreel, so rather than confuse them by trying to write it all out, I figure a video tutorial might be easier!

Hope its helpful!

Ps. You get the same results easier by using Ramp Shaders, the reason I use this method is so the backlighting effect can easily be adjusted for the whole character with just one simple ramp texture.

gorgeous stuff! Thanks a lot man, I am a max user and didn't have a clue how to achieve that in Maya

Thanks Olivier, I know me too! I was a max user user and I just had to find out how to make a falloff map. Use them all the time in max!

    Thanks for the comment!

Thank you, this is great. I use 3ds max and reallly could use your technique here. Any chance you could have time to make a similar tutorial for use with 3ds max (now that you also are know max)?

Hey Lars, glad you liked it. I might have time soon, just started a new job in anew city and had to leave my computer at home for now.

I think you basically just drop the falloff map that goes into mayas "incandescence" slot, into the self illumination slot in in the max material. Though Im sure the levels would need to be adjusted.

Ill need to take a look at max to make sure, but will send you a message when I check it out.
