This is the first HD video sample captured on the upcoming Nokia N8, shot in 720p. This amazing footage of a dancer on a rooftop has not been enhanced or tweaked in any way. It was taken on a device that is not yet running final software.

Nokia comes with music? Where is original soundtrack or does that record sound at all?
  •
  • Jules Holleboom 1 year ago
Well, at first sight, great quality, but the best shots in this clip are clearly taken with assistance of a tripod and maybe even more tools. Most pocket DVR's currently available (Flip, bloggie) can achieve this level of quality, with the appropriate tools.

Phones are not about camera quality any more, they are about connectivity again. And uploading 720P footage to twitvideo is a no-go.

Looks great but why .mov container and not .mp4??
PS3 won't be able to read it :/
  • Eugenia Loli plus 1 year ago
This video was edited on a desktop machine, so it's possible that they simply exported to MOV, not that the phone does MOV. Hopefully it still does MP4.
  • krisq 1 year ago
You are correct. I've got a confirmation from official Nokia blog that it is still .mp4 :)

The quality is just awesome. I'm just waiting for a next MeeGo device with such hardware specs!

  • Jules, i dont know how you could turn this footage in something negative. your absolutely right with the tripod thing, but there is also lots of motion which is handled very well.

and i bet if you wanna tweet something, you can switch to vga mode or something similar.

i think its great to have a 720p mode which really seems to work. there have been others before this but the quality was terrible.
  •
  • Jules Holleboom 1 year ago
I agree with you the quality is very good, but with simple hand shooting you won't get the above result.
  • Ray Farmer 1 year ago
Jules I agree with you, but I think the nokia (and other cellphone manufacturers) motive here is to replace these seperate mini-DVs and "flip HDs" for what I call "social video recording". While you may not be able to currently upload a 720p video to twitvid, you CAN upload (live stream) to QIK and other social video sites. And the exciting part is, this functionality is coming pre-installed on devices such as the HTC-EVO (720p video cell phone as well).

Although the tripod was certainly used here, it looks to me like I'll be able to get some pretty decent quality clips of my friends goofing off and put them on facebook without having to by a flip HD...

Fantastic quality when not held in the hand! I'm sure we'll still get some good results when filming ourselves. Nokia always seems to have the best cameras in their devices (though my SE w810i took fantastic 2MP photos).

WOW. I wonder if this is the raw footage, or it has been run through some editing software? If it's raw, then hats off to Nokia :)
  • Eugenia Loli plus 1 year ago
It's obviously edited, there are cut scenes.
  • Robert Sutcliffe 1 year ago
There's a difference between 'enhanced or tweaked' and 'edited', I dont think they are claiming onboard NLE capabilities here.
  • Eugenia Loli plus 1 year ago
Actually, the phone has a video editor. It's written in the specs. But this video was edited in a desktop machine (hence the .mov container, and super-high bitrate used to upload to Vimeo). *Possibly*, the video was color corrected in that desktop machine too. Which is what everyone should do with their videos anyway, so I don't see that as cheating. I never release anything that's not color graded, for example.

Nice, but I think they need to release this around summer because if wait too long most people just can't wait that long and just buy Samsung I9000 or next Iphone.

It would be nice to reveal how much has been done in post.
  •
  • Jerry Huynh-tot 1 year ago
it would be more honest to show raw footage from the N8, not edited
  • Sami Sinervä plus 1 year ago
What's the difference, really? Once the file is uploaded to Vimeo it's not raw anymore. And just editing a piece and not doing any coloring or other changes is as close to raw you can get. Not a problem in my mind.

VDSLR brought high quality filmmaking to the indie crowd. Now as cameras, computers and phones merge, HD cellphone video brings it to the masses. Video blogging has just taken a big step forward. I recently tried an experiment where I used an iPhone and a Redrock Micro support rig to live video blog at NAB 2010 - photocinenews.com/2010/04/19/iphone-video-blogging-what-worked-and-what-didnt/
The instantaneous part was pretty close but the quality needs some work. Having cell phones with HD video capability really is a game changer.

1 min = 175 MB > edited ! how big would have to be ur n8 internal HD for u to get ur birthday party in it?

color = "picture profile" like 7d ..when u "grade" ur image curve b4 the compression

i've downloaded and saw in 19" lcd.. looks very good.. but u can see loads of noise in specific areas.

    720p win dancer fail! >))

    it is too good....
I'm recalling my patience and preparing to wait.
three years ago or a little bit more N95 made such a noise...
I have it and I don't think that there are devices good enough to change my multimedia computer.
But as I look at the video, i guess this will be my next passion
Hope the price won't rise higher than $1000 as it was in case with n95 in Ukraine during hot April of 2007

Nokia forever.
  • Oliver Pérez 1 year ago
