18. The Boat Ramp - Letus Extreme Film - HDTV
1 year ago
I had the day off today and it was finally warming up. The temperature was 85 degrees F with high humidity. I thought that the Ashland State Park in Massachusetts would be full of people in boats and I was right.

I brought my Sony EX1 with the Letus Extreme 35mm film lens adapter to the lake. I am using the EX1 acromat upgrade kit. This time, I brought my dolly with twenty feet of track, my super-secret EX1/LEX underwater system, my home-made jib, my Vinten Vision 3 tripod and some lenses.

I only used the short arm today on my jib. I also have a long arm that lets me extend to almost 20 feet off the ground!

I also brought my Glidecam 4000 with body pack, the panning telescope head and my super-secret motor to pull my dolly down the track for motorized time lapses. I did not have time to use any of these contraptions. I will incorporate them all in my next short.

I hung out by the busy boat ramp and shot on or near the sloped dirt where people load in their floatables. I moved my jib to about four different places, used only the Sigma 18mm (on the jib) and the Nikon 200mm lens (long shorts) with a gradient filter and a polarizer. The Sigma lens is cheap and I only use it because it is so wide. I will be using my Nikon Nikkor 24mm f2.8 for these jib shots in my next short because it is better glass.

The lake people were very pleasant and very interested in my jib. They would come over and check it out and ask a few questions.

This entire short was shot in 720p 30p and the camera was overcranked to 60 FPS. This gives you the sliky smooth slow motion.

I dialed the EX1 camera picture profile to “Cine2” and set the HiSAT to +99 for a lot of in camera saturation. I messed with the saturation and black levels in Final Cut and used Magic Bullet Looks to color grade and add blue to the sky.

Try to find the fish jumping in the video. I will soon reveal my secrets for putting the EX1 with the Letus underwater and I will also post pictures of my jib to my blog on my website, tomguilmette.com

Gotta' love that movement :) Some scenes were too yellow, though. Almost looked like an episode of 'The Simpsons' :D

i agree. i do live saturation tho...

some of the flesh tones were over the top.

did i mention i am red/green color blind. that could be the problem.

Excellent work Tom. Can you pan the head of your home-made jib? Doesn't matter one way or another, because the shots look FANTASTIC!
  • Tom Guilmette plus 1 year ago
i cannot pan or tilt this camera. it is fixed, but with my jib design, it remains level as i boom up and down.

Great video! Loved the dolly and jib shots. Slow mo set a nice mood. Curious about your underwater housing "secret". I have a short underwater video in my backyard koi pond. Placed my Sony HD cam in...

here is the secret. a ten dollar ten gallon aquarium. this was the "reverse aquarium" trick.

just put a camera into an aquarium and push the aquarium around the lake. you can go underwater...just make sure you dont push the aquarium so low that water pours in over the sides.

i did not invent this. i wish i could say i did.

Great work, Tom. Isn't the pic profile function on the EX-1 awesome?!? I am about to do some field tests with my EX-1/LEX setup in the next couple of weeks.

  • Amazing tracking shots. Just as the lake people, I'm interested in your home-made jib. Anything you want to share of its design? thanks.

I cant wait to add either the Letus or the Mini35 on my EX1.
Hot image dude! Brings a tear to my eye.

Does the Letus flip the image? I really dont want another monitor for my nature shots. Compact and less is the key for me.

Love it Tom. Perhaps a little too oversaturated for my personal tastes but I guess it adds to the warm summery feeling of the piece so I shouldn't complain! Nice smooth jib and track shots that kind of calmed me down as I watched it and gave me the feeling of being there, which is a lovely thing to be able to do as a film maker, great work!
