very well done. I understood most of this, but still ended up learning something new and useful.

everyone serious about filming something should see this.

Whoa thats funny. I reconized your name off Youtube on your Red White Panic film.

Great job on it by the way. You have proved that you don't need a 35mm to make a good film. Very inspirational! :)

    thanks Matt.

I'd prefer 35mm, but you make do.

thanks, the relationship between depth of focus and depth of field now makes sense in mind. Can you explain though where the naming convention for lenses comes from? I understand that a low mm lens will have a wide angle and a high mm lens will have a telephoto angle, but what is this based on?
  • Torsten Roman 7 months ago
the terms 'wide angle lens' and 'telephoto lens' refer to the way the lenses are built rather than to the image they produce. SLR cameras don't go together well with lenses that have a very short focal length as the mirror inside the camera body would be blocked by the back of such a lens. Telephoto lenses on the other hand are shorter than the actual focal length they have due to the way they are constructed (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephoto_lens).

I need an Advil, becuase that gave me a headache. I'm new to photography and filming concepts, and that blew my mind. If all that can't be explained any simpler, then I'm in trouble! But I do appreciate the resource and that I'm able to watch it a few times until it (hopefully) clicks.

Nicely presented and very well explained. Other explanations tell you about the problems but this gives you the reasons.

Highest Marks! Very well done. And a good example of what good pre-production can produce. Clearly this presentation was well thought-out long ahead of time, before shooting ever started.

Thanks for posting this here. Now I gotta go check these guys out at snodart.com

Excellent, I think this can also be called 'DOF for Dummies', although it is appropriate for all. Its explained very clearly.
I joined Vimeo just to give this comment.

Great tutorial-about 90% correct...Unless I'm mistaken though, your description of hyperfocal distance is wrong. You say the lens should be set at infinity. This is incorrect. it should be set to the hyeprfocal distance for that format/aperture/focal length (using a DOF chart or calculator). Setting the lens at infinity will not give you the same results. Hyperfocal is the maximum area of focus and may not actually give you from X(near distance) to infinity.
Other than that, this is a great visual tool! Well done!
