In this video Asialink talk with some of Australia’s most seasoned journalists about media coverage of the Asian region. All three conclude that reporting of Asia is predominantly events driven, rather than based on a sustained focus on key issues. Australia has less and less dedicated correspondents based in Asia – and the repercussions from this are substantial.

Rowan Callick is Asia Pacific Editor of the Australian newspaper and for three years the paper’s Beijing-based China correspondent. Michael Gawenda is the inaugural Director of the Centre for Advanced Journalism at the University of Melbourne and former editor and editor-in-chief of The Age newspaper (Melbourne) and a former editor of TIME South Pacific. K.C Boey is a former Melbourne-based correspondent for the New Straits Times (Malaysia).

This video was recorded on Tuesday 29 April prior to a presentation for the Asialink Leaders Program.
