See all Show me
Every time I venture out with my camera I cannot help but be struck with natures awe ... even the simple things we walk past many times have a beauty if we just stop and look.

The footage for this film was taken over a period of an hour or so near where I live, again I'm using the JVC GZ-HD7 in manual mode and for the first time I'm trying out one or two shots with an ultra wide angle lens attachment outside its range to create a kind of dreamy quality, and I'm also working in tele macro mode on many shots too.

The more I work with this camera the more I realise the key is `creative control` and you can only do this in manual mode.

Music by my good friend Tony Cummings aka ActiveMinded - thanks bro! projectoverseer.biz/members/265/

FUTURE NOTES:
I will soon own the Sony EX1 ... hopefully HD at its best!

Beautiful work Chris. This is all looking so very exciting. I need to talk with you and Tracy soon...it looks like the Internet collaboration album might go ahead in a slightly different form...and I will get to finish the documentary about it. This is brilliant work. Can you so some inside artificial light stuff next?
  • Thank you David, I'm basically trying out as many things as possible with this cam, and the more I learn, the more I'm impressed, and having complete control of this unit opens up a whole new world, though I admit its not for the `point & shoot` videographer, but if you're serious about your images and want to explore creative control (and this applies to all cameras) you've got to have manual control.
My next film called `Time` is being filmed in artificial light - with creative control.

Many thanks David for your positive encouragement ... I'm finding it very exciting too!

This is beautiful Chris! Sometimes it's the smallest things in nature that are the most intriguing and so cleverly designed.
We take it all for granted - how the tapestry of life is so intricately woven and balanced.
Makes me SO mad when we humans mess with it!
    Anyway...:)
The lense you used....yes I can see that dream like quality there. Very nice!
The music is so absolutely fitting for this film. Fantastic!

I'll be interested to see the results of your filming inside with artificial light.
BTW...you probably noticed but I cheated with that video of my dog and the "flame". It was on auto.
    Shame on me. lol!
I think I'm going to have to get some extra lighting of some sort to film inside as even during the day this place is SO dark!

Hi chris, this is beauty redefined. Wonderful photography. Would you share your settings for uploading from quicktime to Vimeo? Tx.
  • Hi Vino, thank you so much for you kind comments and encouragement.
As for my settings, I don't use Qiucktime for rendering as the results always seem to compressed.
So what I do is take the original 1920i X 1080i .TOD file, edit in that format interlaced, then render to HD mpg2 at 1280p X 720p (progressive) to smooth things out.

On Vimeo it seems to work well ... hope that helps.
See below for more details Vino.

Tx Chris. Let me give you my configuration as I am a Mac user since 1987 and somebody else might help. As you know everybody were having problem with their .TOD file. After some struggling I managed to get some clip edited. I use an Intel based MacBookPro, imovie HD, Finalcut Express. I do have imovie 8 but the .TOD file won't work. I didn't update my FCE 3.5.1 to 4.0 yet as am not sure whether its worth it. In the mean time I use the imovie HD to keep things simple and try to get the most out of the camera itself. JVC should reward you for what you are doing with this camera. Looking forward to see all the other videos you will be posting as you have now become a guru.

Hey, Chris. Another cracking piece of work there.

Just to further ask about settings you use for Vimeo (something I'd like to get better at, do you save deinterlaced at 24 frames? Also do you specify a maximum stream rate?

I'm a bit new to it all and these codecs, bistream rates, formats, resolutions etc etc aaaarrrrggghhhh!!!! are driving me a little nuts. Cheers in advance mate.

Oh, and what's the editing software you're using too please?
  • Thanks Wayne for your time and kind comments ... getting things just right with the HD7 includes how you handle the files once they're in you PC for editing, so I did lots of experimenting.

Basically I keep everything in its original .TOD format, this as you know is really nothing more than mpg2 with a tag. Anyway, I'll edit the full 1920i x 1080i interlaced,
once editing is done I use HD MPEG files render at:
    24 bits, 1280p x 720p, 25 fps progressive
Frame-based (MPEG-2 Transport stream), 16:9 to smooth things out.
I use a range of editing software from Sony, Edius and Ulead. This film was edited on Ulead's 11.5 video studio which has a whole range of HD editing options. I also made sure I had the latest windows Codec package too - everything seemed to work much better when that was added to the system.

    Hope that helps Wayne.

Thanks Chris, I've written it down and will see if I can make sense of it within FCP on Mac. I can't work natively with TOD files in FCP, although Steve Mullen says there's a workaround using iMovie 08. So I usually shoot HDV 1440 constant bit rate and capture into FCP as if it were tape.

I'll have a play with it when I get time.

    Cheers again,
  • Try this Wayne ... take a .TOD file and rename the file type as .mpg ... I'm sure on the mac it will allow you to work directly with that file ... let me know if that works?

    A Giant Leap!!!

My first thoughts as the film unfolded?

    !!!!!WOW!!!!!!

This an mighty display of intuitive and carefully considered Cinematography. You "most certainly" know how to craft many many images into a scene that not only captivates the viewer but blows their mind.

I love how you capture the most basic of things and film them in amongst the shear complexity of nature. This brings thoughts to my activemind, I thought how easy it would be, to live life in paradise and harmony.
What really sickens me is the fact that we as a race have the knowledge and resources to DO this, With our planet and each other. Yet we choose not too? Its so easy when you think about it. This film provokes all those pure and wholesome thoughts.

As the film starts to unfold you get the overwhelming feeling that Chris knows something and is telling you.
The people that know what he is saying "get it". I am so glad that I am one of us.

How the images were edited insinc with the music is a display of sheer class...
Yes Chris I would see it and "it worked".

There is another thing that this film tells me. As the comments have progressed on this page regarding the film. I have noticed that the topic has moved from "feeling" to "Technollogy".
Don't worry about this Chris. Its is a reflection on the quality of the images. Quality speaks for itself and this shouts loud but with subtlety. Its vision like this, that creates a video that ticks "ALL" the boxes with effortless finesse and style.

Theres one thing you missed though Chris, my horse, I loved dat horsie LOL kidding bruv!!

Chris, this video raises your profile hugely, I feel privileged to be part of it.
    As the track say's
"You will always have a friend in me".

    Most respectfully
    YKB
    Tony

    PS
I created a moto logo in "89". I have had to wait all these years until i found the reason why i did.

  • Tony, thank you my friend for your wonderful comments ... there's a private message for you here, though it looks as if you know anyway ;-)

BIG thank you too for letting me use your beautiful musical creation `G` ... you're a superb composer Tony, and your ambient works are real gems, I'm just honoured you feel I've done `visual` justice to this superb track.
    Your brother always,

    Hi Chris.

Tried it, FCP just spat out its dummy and went home. I'll carry on playing. Cheers

  • Oh well, just an idea Wayne ... I know some who have managed to get away with it, but regardless you're still producing superb results with highly impressive concepts and ideas.
