This lovely video shows the energy people have as they discover the how the things they make change their world. The excitement of the impact of the web as a more important device for amplifying the human experience than anything since the wheel is palpable.

    Kate,
Most of us think about the Semantic Web in terms of everyday applications: how it fits in and enhances internet experiences. You did a fine job in abstracting its value and putting in a format people can understand. This video compilation is a MUST WATCH. Thank you.

well done! hard work, well edited, good music, nice graphics.

the opening sentence gave me personal chills - its just on point. I used the same opening in my master thesis "semantic desktop" in 2003. still valid - we need to use semantic web to organize ourselves.

Really enjoyed this but did no one else notice that there are absolutely NO women? It can't possibly be that there are no women at all thinking about the semantic web!
  • Kate Ray 2 years ago
Yes, I did think about that. I tried to choose my subjects for their specific contributions to the story, regardless of gender or race (the film wasn't exactly racially-diverse either), but by no means are these people representative of the whole community. The Semantic Web, like much of the tech scene, is pretty male-dominated but two women I probably would have included if I'd had the opportunity are Deborah McGuinness, who's been very involved with the semweb for awhile and done tons of great work with it, and Barbara McGlamery, an ex-librarian who worked as an ontologist for Time Magazine and introduced me to the 'HasBeeninRehabWith' relationship designed specially for celebrities, at an SWNYC Meetup. There are many many others, of course.
  • Smarthistory Videos pro 2 years ago
Thanks for your reply! Glad to hear you thought about it - but unfortunately the video reinforces a bad stereotype that women can't/don't think about these issues and an idea of an "old boys club" that is very difficult for a lot of women in tech. I mean it's interesting that no one here even commented on that - its like we just expect it to be men talking about these issues and it's so sad to me that we don't even notice.
  • steev hise plus 2 years ago
I thought of it about halfway through watching and then sat and waited, hoping some non-male interviewee would pop up, and then was amazed when one never did. I understand the explanation, Kate, but I agree with Smarthistory Videos on this. Mediamakers need pay attention to these things and act on them accordingly so as not to perpetuate the status quo.
  • Maciej Siwek 2 years ago
This argument is simply wrong. And can be risen only by people with stereotypes or really obsessed about it. If you acknowledge that everybody is equal it should not be any problem who is shown where. Just try to substitute women with left-handers in your posts and see if they are not silly.
  • Kate Ray 2 years ago
It's a tricky issue, since I see your argument that not including women perpetuates a stereotype in the minds of people watching, but including women specifically for their gender perpetuates a pattern of unequal treatment.

Here's my opinion on the issue:
Since I'm now co-founding an Internet based start-up (an area that's 92% male, according to NYTimes), I'd consider myself a 'woman in tech,' and am acutely aware that it makes a difference.
I would absolutely encourage more women to get into the tech industry. If all my plans and dreams came true with this start-up and I were suddenly very successful, I would scream out of frustration if, after all that, I were profiled in the NYTimes or somewhere else JUST because I was a woman (unless the article was about female entrepreneurs). I wouldn't want to be interviewed for anyone's project as the token female. It would make me feel cheapened.

Excellent job, Kate. As SmartHistory had commented, it also did absence a bit of female representatives in the interviews. I study the gender issue in the IT, in particular, the female presence in the free and open source software.
    Thanks you.

  • christine mitchell 2 years ago
Thanks for spending the time to make the video, I enjoyed it. The lack of women commenters was disconcerting. I also agree that you should tell the story you want to tell without forcing inclusions that aren't there. I do hope it the very visible imbalance will inspire people to think about who's directing tech/web development and that this will prompt both women and men to work to break this pattern.

I'm also interested in the language question -- can the semantic web make connections outside of language, or is it just a fancy way of talking about mass tagging? If so, will there be a bunch of different natural language ontologies, connected by machine translation (or unconnected)?
  •
  • Excellent piece of work: it enters deeply enough to the problem without making it boring...it's very dynamic.

Regarding the discussion above about women's presence in the video I can't do anything but agree with Maciej Siwek: I think your goal is to simply find the best source of information for your project, all limited by your time and budget.

Oh, last thing: if you still need someone to translate it to spanish do not hesitate to let me know and I'll start at once! Cheers.

Hi Kate, I very much like the video and what the men in the world have to say about the semantic web, but it would have been even better if some women had had a voice in the discussion as well. Should women not also have a voice in how the semantic web and the eXtended web are being shaped?
