Received my HV30 today and quickly shot some footage with it and the Brevis35.

I'm absolutely blown away by this little camera - especially combined with the Brevis.

The other day I shot some footage with my A1+Brevis combo and I'm hard pressed to tell the difference. Quite amazing.

My wife Katie kindly helped me out again :)

    Hi Matt,
Yeah, the quality of the HV30 is just about on par with the A1, it's really quite amazing actually! Was this 24p?
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
    Hey Steve,

Yeah, I'm really blown away with the results. Shot in 50i and de-interlaced in post.
  •
  • I was wondering do you prefer 50i over 25p/f? I know I use 50i 1/125 if I plan to shoot slow motion but other then that I use 25f
  •
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
    Hey Peter,

I've mainly preferred 50i - but that's probably more out of habit than anything - and not having spent much time playing around with 25f.

Also, some of my work involves making TV commercials so I generally always shoot in 50i - that way I have the option of keeping it 50i for broadcast or de-interlacing in post to get a progressive clip for my 'off-air' stuff.

Nice footage Matt. Are you familiar with the SDcard trick for control over the HV20/HV30's exposure? If not...here you go. Have fun :)

PS: Did you use a filter for the shots aimed at the sky? Nice.
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
That's awesome! Thanks for the heads up.

No filters used - just CC'd in post.

Hey Matt, I got this neat Hood & Magnifier combo for my HV20's LCD and it works very nicely. It might even help some adapter users with better focusing if not using a larger HD monitor, and is NOT expensive at all.

    Very nice!
How you deal with the flipped image when shooting? The reason I bought a letus and not a brevis is because of the built in flip but I'm looking to add a smaller combo to take on roadtrips. My current combo (xha1+letus extreme + lens + rods) wheighs a ton and is way to long to handle easy.
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
    Hey Kjewbee,

I'm using the Brevis+Flip module so the image isn't flipped. Yeah, the A1 and a 35mm adapter does weigh a tonne. That's why I prefer using my adapter with the HV30 - it's a lot lighter and easier to shoot handheld. Doesn't Letus make a mini adapter?

Yeah, my wife pulled me up on that shot with a "What's that meant to mean?". I was actually timing that shot to the lyrics "set me free" but some people have interpreted it from the 'ball and chain' angle ;)

Hey, I love your videoes. How do put it into 50ip?
I just got my camera today..hehe i have no clue about it.
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Depends on your location. 50i is for PAL. NTSC is 60i.
  • Rafael Sebastian 1 year ago
thx, How do iknow if i have PAL or NTSC? and where do I swicth'em?
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Pretty sure you can't switch them on the HV30 ... you're either one or the other. Depends on the country that you're living in.

This site has a list which might help - saxoncourtbooks.co.uk/aircraftdvds/videoformats.htm

Hey Matt, I have been fidling with my new HV30 :) and my Brevis, I can't seem to get a sharp focus to infinity with my lense, do you have any single screenshot of your unprocessed video (1440x1080). I would like to do a comparison if Im doing something wrong. Im using the quality of your footage as a benchmark for my HV30/Brevis footage.
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
    Hey John,

Have you tried the differential focusing method? Have a look at Cinevate University - cinevate.com/website/index.php/videouniversity/ - I found those videos really useful in setting up my Brevis.

I'll try to find some time to post some unprocessed footage/screenshot - no promises though ;)

    Cheers,

    Matthew.

Thanks Matthew, it's all good! I finally adjusted the collimation of the Brevis and now my footage is sharp! This footage is actually what sold me to sell my old Sony A1U and buy the HV30! I look forward on seeing more of your work! :) So upload!!! Great Job!

    Matt,
Four questions I can't find the answer to, but I am dying to find out:

    1. Specifically which Nikon 1.8 are you using? E series? AIS?
    2. What do you pull the footage into, which codec? It looks sooooo sharp. The brevis has a really nice achromat.
    3. What did you do for color processing? Did you crush the blacks a little? It looks so nice.
    4. Are you shooting at 1.8 in this footage?
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
    Hey Benjamin,

I've sent you a message with some more detailed info.

Excellent quality. Looks identical to the results in a high-end commercial. More interesting, artistic shots, but the same level of polish. This convinced me to go outside my budget and get a 35mm adapter to go with my HV30 (Letus mini is on it's way). Now I just need a subject as photogenic as yours...

I'm just curious. Are any of the shots here borrowed from the similar "XH-A1 Brevis35 - First Footage" video, or where they all redone with the HV30? Some are near identical shots, but look unique in each version. Just hoping every shot here is possible with this combo.

If this is all the HV30, you would almost think it's overkill to even get an XH-A1. I know it's a whole
different level (one I have to convince myself isn't all it's cracked up to be so I can still feel like I'm in the running with the junior version), but with results like this it almost starts to look
like you pay more just to weigh more.

Score one for the little camera!
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
    Hey J C,

Yep, all the shots in this video are done using the HV30+Brevis, no borrowing from the A1+Brevis footage at all.

The HV30 is an awesome little camera but it doesn't beat an XH-A1. I'd never really use the HV30 as a main camera but it'd be great as a 2nd camera. I mainly purchased the HV30 to use with the Brevis for run and gun type stuff. I used the A1+Brevis in that way for a day and it nearly killed me - the HV30+Brevis is much more manageable.

The A1 as a 'raw' camera beats the HV30 hands down - the picture quality is similar but with the A1 you have so much more control over the image. Not to mention the A1's 20x zoom plus stacks of other features.

But, for almost the same money as an A1 you can get a HV30+35mm adapter combo - it's a very impressive package that's for sure.

What happens if you put the HV30 and the adapter on a steadicam MErlin or Glidecam4000. I don't want to have shaky videos with my combo.

I haven't tried the combo on the Merlin but I'd be surprised if it could handle the weight. Plus, focusing would be next to impossible I would think.

Truly amazing filming. And your wife is beautiful!

I'm fairly new to filming, well I've always been interested but never got to the point to get my own camera. But your videos with the HV30+Brevis35 really got me thinking of buying a HV30 and Brevis35+flip. Since I'm new to filming I don't want to spend a whole lot of money on my first camera. HV30 seems to give superb quality footage, and with the Brevis - it's just amazing. And it goes for a good price too!

So what do you think about a HV30+Brevis35 for my first setup? I will be shooting all kinds of stuff from snowboarding to a normal day at home.

I have another question too, about steadicams. What kind of steadicam do you use in your shots? Your moving shots just flows, looks wonderful.

    Thanks in advance Matt!

Hey Matt E: I just got the same setup...any advise that will save me some headache? Any way to lock exposure on this little devil? Also, what glass element are you running in the Brevis? Love your work!

    -Matt B
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Yep, you can certainly lock exposure on the HV30. It's a bit hard to explain so check out your instruction manual. The other thing to watch out for is that the HV30 doesn't actually display the full image in the LCD viewfinder. You have to make sure to zoom in a little bit further so that you don't get any of the adapter in the image.

Hi Matt- outstanding footage- do you have the flip version of the brevis? if so is this still as portable as you say-on the Cinevate website with the flip it looks rather long- do you absolutely need rails to support it effectively or does it work OK without? with the vibrating unit- can you effectively record sound without hearing the vibration- cannot tell as most adapter footage on Vimeo is with music over and cannot tell how the raw footage sounds- thank you- have a DIY static adapter already- thinking of selling as with much research, the Brevis still seems to produce the best, sharpest image- PS: do you get much vignetting or chromatic abberation with the Brevis?
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Thanks Justin! Yep, I'm using the Brevis with the flip module. I'd be pretty hesitant about using the HV30+Brevis without rails. That's a lot of weight to be putting on the small thread of the HV30. Regarding sound, I haven't experienced any problems with hearing the adapter or anything during any interview shoots.

I've been super happy with the HV30+Brevis. I do a lot of vignetting in post so vignetting by the adapter or edge to edge sharpness isn't much of a concern to me.

    Hope that helps!

im a new booty, adn am going to purchase my first camera . it will be between hv30 , hf100, or hv20 . most likely going with hv30. i need some tips since im new. what the hell is a brevis ? what does it do to the picture, and will the hv30 not look as good without it ? because this video looks pro. thanks
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Hey PK! I've only used the HV30 so I can't really comment about any other cameras. The Brevis is a 35mm adapter - basically it allows you to attach still camera lenses to your video camera to achieve shallow depth of field. It's a look that you can't achieve with a bare video camera. The HV30 is an awesome camera on it's own but a 35mm adapter takes it to a whole new level - and it's a relatively inexpensive combo.

    Hope that helps!

Amazing footage. I'm a newbie to all this as well as some of your other commenters. I've never commented on a vid before and was compelled to comment on this one because it was so beautiful. Well done.

Being a newbie I have a newbie question...

Along with my hv30 I purchased a Hague Mini Motion stabilizer. I am now looking to get the brevis35 for my cam too. Will these two things work together? Or will the weight of the lens throw off the stabilizer?

Also, I've been trying to figure out what rails system I would need for the brevis but can't tell. Are there multiple options when choosing rails? Or is it necessary to buy a particular setup/brand?

    Thank you!
  • Matt E plus 1 year ago
Hey Addison. Thanks for commenting. I've never used the Hague Mini Motion stabilizer so I can't really comment as to how it will go with the Brevis. If it's anything like a Steadicam Merlin the Brevis will no doubt throw off the balance.

I'm using the Proteus rails with the 45cm rods. I'd suggest e-mailing the guys at Cinevate, they're super helpful and should be able to point you in the right direction.

    Cheers!

Hey Matt, let me start by saying what many have said. Wow! Your footage is amazing! It be awesome if you could answer a few questions you answered for some of the other guys above. Here they are:

    1. What kind of steadicam did you use in your shots?
    2. What do you pull the footage into, which codec? It
    3. What did you do for color processing? Did you crush the blacks a little?

    Hey Yardley.

    1. Steadicam Merlin
    2. I'm using Cineform Aspect HD and Premiere Pro 2.0

    Hi
Sorry, if I am writing to an inappropriate site. I have a CF-L lens for my brevis adapter and I want to ask how you are cleaning it if there is a stain on it and if there is dust on it. I cleaned it very gently but the dust always comes again, before I put it to the adapter.
  • Matt E plus 11 months ago
Hey. Yeah, I find it really hard to keep my Brevis and imaging element clean. Check out the Cinevate forums for some ideas. I've tried using compressed air but it still always comes back. I just put up with it, the dust is a pain but it's not really noticeable once the adapter is turned on.

    Hey Matt,

First Off I am amazed that this thread is still going strong after 7 months!

I'm sure you are very tired of answering newbie questions, but I figured I would give it a shot.

I too own a HV30 and was looking to add the adapter and lens; however, I am slightly confused about the entire process. Particularly when it comes to choosing the correct lens. The Brevis website makes you choose which mount the unit is constructed for (Nikon, Canon etc.) however, is interchange an option? Any Info you could share about the entire process would greatly be appreciated. Also seven months later do you have any regrets?

    Thank You!
  • Matt E plus 6 months ago
Hey Michael. So sorry for my slow reply. No regrets, although the Canon 5D has meant my Brevis is a bit dusty ;) You can buy different lens mounts for the Brevis, depending on the brand of lenses you've got.
