HV30 + Brevis35 - First Footage - HD
Received my HV30 today and quickly shot some footage with it and the Brevis35.
I'm absolutely blown away by this little camera - especially combined with the Brevis.
The other day I shot some footage with my A1+Brevis combo and I'm hard pressed to tell the difference. Quite amazing.
My wife Katie kindly helped me out again :)
Lens used: Nikon 50mm 1.8

Yeah, the quality of the HV30 is just about on par with the A1, it's really quite amazing actually! Was this 24p?
Yeah, I'm really blown away with the results. Shot in 50i and de-interlaced in post.
I've mainly preferred 50i - but that's probably more out of habit than anything - and not having spent much time playing around with 25f.
Also, some of my work involves making TV commercials so I generally always shoot in 50i - that way I have the option of keeping it 50i for broadcast or de-interlacing in post to get a progressive clip for my 'off-air' stuff.

PS: Did you use a filter for the shots aimed at the sky? Nice.
No filters used - just CC'd in post.

I really was not expecting much with this but it does a fine job. Just thought I would share this info.
Thanks for the tip!
How you deal with the flipped image when shooting? The reason I bought a letus and not a brevis is because of the built in flip but I'm looking to add a smaller combo to take on roadtrips. My current combo (xha1+letus extreme + lens + rods) wheighs a ton and is way to long to handle easy.
I'm using the Brevis+Flip module so the image isn't flipped. Yeah, the A1 and a 35mm adapter does weigh a tonne. That's why I prefer using my adapter with the HV30 - it's a lot lighter and easier to shoot handheld. Doesn't Letus make a mini adapter?
what use to deinterlace in ppro 2 ?
There's a checkbox in the export window in PPro 2.0 - under "Keyframe and Rendering"
Yeah, my wife pulled me up on that shot with a "What's that meant to mean?". I was actually timing that shot to the lyrics "set me free" but some people have interpreted it from the 'ball and chain' angle ;)
I just got my camera today..hehe i have no clue about it.
This site has a list which might help - saxoncourtbooks.co.uk/aircraftdvds/videoformats.htm
Have you tried the differential focusing method? Have a look at Cinevate University - cinevate.com/website/index.php/videouniversity/ - I found those videos really useful in setting up my Brevis.
I'll try to find some time to post some unprocessed footage/screenshot - no promises though ;)
Cheers,
Matthew.
Four questions I can't find the answer to, but I am dying to find out:
1. Specifically which Nikon 1.8 are you using? E series? AIS?
2. What do you pull the footage into, which codec? It looks sooooo sharp. The brevis has a really nice achromat.
3. What did you do for color processing? Did you crush the blacks a little? It looks so nice.
4. Are you shooting at 1.8 in this footage?
I've sent you a message with some more detailed info.
Cheers,
Matthew.
I'm just curious. Are any of the shots here borrowed from the similar "XH-A1 Brevis35 - First Footage" video, or where they all redone with the HV30? Some are near identical shots, but look unique in each version. Just hoping every shot here is possible with this combo.
If this is all the HV30, you would almost think it's overkill to even get an XH-A1. I know it's a whole
different level (one I have to convince myself isn't all it's cracked up to be so I can still feel like I'm in the running with the junior version), but with results like this it almost starts to look
like you pay more just to weigh more.
Score one for the little camera!
Yep, all the shots in this video are done using the HV30+Brevis, no borrowing from the A1+Brevis footage at all.
The HV30 is an awesome little camera but it doesn't beat an XH-A1. I'd never really use the HV30 as a main camera but it'd be great as a 2nd camera. I mainly purchased the HV30 to use with the Brevis for run and gun type stuff. I used the A1+Brevis in that way for a day and it nearly killed me - the HV30+Brevis is much more manageable.
The A1 as a 'raw' camera beats the HV30 hands down - the picture quality is similar but with the A1 you have so much more control over the image. Not to mention the A1's 20x zoom plus stacks of other features.
But, for almost the same money as an A1 you can get a HV30+35mm adapter combo - it's a very impressive package that's for sure.
I linked to your video in my blog. Let me know if that's ok :)

I'm fairly new to filming, well I've always been interested but never got to the point to get my own camera. But your videos with the HV30+Brevis35 really got me thinking of buying a HV30 and Brevis35+flip. Since I'm new to filming I don't want to spend a whole lot of money on my first camera. HV30 seems to give superb quality footage, and with the Brevis - it's just amazing. And it goes for a good price too!
So what do you think about a HV30+Brevis35 for my first setup? I will be shooting all kinds of stuff from snowboarding to a normal day at home.
I have another question too, about steadicams. What kind of steadicam do you use in your shots? Your moving shots just flows, looks wonderful.
Thanks in advance Matt!
Thanks for the compliments! I'll send you a message with some more detailed info.

Matthew.
I just cropped the video to achieve the letterbox look. I'm pretty sure I exported this in MP4 using H.264 and the settings recommended by Vimeo.

I've been super happy with the HV30+Brevis. I do a lot of vignetting in post so vignetting by the adapter or edge to edge sharpness isn't much of a concern to me.
Hope that helps!
I used the HV30 in TV mode and use the exposure lock quite a bit. I can't remember what info I gave Benjamin so feel free to remind me :)
Hope that helps!
Being a newbie I have a newbie question...
Along with my hv30 I purchased a Hague Mini Motion stabilizer. I am now looking to get the brevis35 for my cam too. Will these two things work together? Or will the weight of the lens throw off the stabilizer?
Also, I've been trying to figure out what rails system I would need for the brevis but can't tell. Are there multiple options when choosing rails? Or is it necessary to buy a particular setup/brand?
Thank you!
I'm using the Proteus rails with the 45cm rods. I'd suggest e-mailing the guys at Cinevate, they're super helpful and should be able to point you in the right direction.
Cheers!
you have put in developing your craft, but with the right lens on the HV and practice ,I might be able to get footage like yours?
I am now convinced that a Brevis is the perfect match for my HV30.
1. What kind of steadicam did you use in your shots?
2. What do you pull the footage into, which codec? It
3. What did you do for color processing? Did you crush the blacks a little?
4. Are you shooting at 1.8 in this footage?
Thanks so much!
1. Steadicam Merlin
2. I'm using Cineform Aspect HD and Premiere Pro 2.0
3. Magic Bullet Suite
4. Yep, 1.8 all the way!
Sorry, if I am writing to an inappropriate site. I have a CF-L lens for my brevis adapter and I want to ask how you are cleaning it if there is a stain on it and if there is dust on it. I cleaned it very gently but the dust always comes again, before I put it to the adapter.
First Off I am amazed that this thread is still going strong after 7 months!
I'm sure you are very tired of answering newbie questions, but I figured I would give it a shot.
I too own a HV30 and was looking to add the adapter and lens; however, I am slightly confused about the entire process. Particularly when it comes to choosing the correct lens. The Brevis website makes you choose which mount the unit is constructed for (Nikon, Canon etc.) however, is interchange an option? Any Info you could share about the entire process would greatly be appreciated. Also seven months later do you have any regrets?
Thank You!
Excellent Work.
I've searched through your comments and replies looking for what imaging element you use in your brevis (ie. cxfuse, CF1Le, etc.)
Which one is in your adapter?
Thanks man.
