Beautiful, Karen. This turned out great.
  • aww thanks Ben! it was quite a tedious task to individually colour correct each of those photos in photoshop and such but worth it.
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
Obviously, I'm a n00b at this, but could you have arranged things in iMovie and then imported that movie file to FCP to do the color correction?
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
Oh. I looks like you used Photo Motion. As I have no idea what that app can do, you can ignore my comment above.
  • No, you are absolutely correct. Initially I would put them in imovie export a quicktime MOV and then bring it into FCP to adjust speeds..however...for some reason doing that makes the quality look like babyvomit. ALSO...FCP is not conducive to photomotion because all of my photos are labled 1-1000+...each in separate folders...HOWEVER when Final Cut pro presents them in the bin.instead of numbering:

    1
    2
    3
    4
and so on and so forth

    the numbering system is

    1
    100
    101
    102
    blah blah blah then
    2
    200

    etc

so essentially all the numbers are mixed up.

It's really irritating and I had to drop them in frame by frame....iMovie did this as well...and it usually doesn't...i think after I reach a certain number, it just doesn't know what to do with them anymore.

My rationale for colour correcting in photoshop and lightroom is that i have way more control over the image rather than if I were to use color correction in fcp, which essentially has like 3 buttons and dials..as opposed to the hundreds on photoshop.

That way, every single image is good enough to stand on its own as a photograph.
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
You obviously know what you are talking about.

Next time, you could use the "Add to File Names.scpt" applescript in /Library/Scripts/Finder Scripts to add 0's to things to bring them all up to the same number of digits (0001, 0012, 0183, 1839, etc). If you want to do this, message me for some of the tricks you have to do.
  • haha wow that makes so much sense...i need to learn how to do that. applescript? did you just sneeze in a different language? what's that...hahah oh wow..i didnt know those were there..teach me your ways professor. wow that could've saved me hours of pain and crying...hahah
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
    I'll email you some details.

It's like I have a window into the genius brains of vimeo in this thread.
  • hahaha Jon, hardly, well maybe Professor Millett...he's full of words of wisdom...after all, he is my life coach. :-) too kind.
  • Ben Millett 1 year ago
Ha! I was just going to tell Jon that you (Karen) are the wise one and that I just manage to get by and not get thrown out of vimeo for my attempts at creativity.

    haha...i loved it! :]
seems like fun to make a photomotion video, Karen :]
i have to get a tutorial bout how to actually make one or something...
Loved the Blanket!! [..maybe thats why it makes u sleepy :]
  • aww photomotion is fun just take a bunch of photos and import them into a timeline, and adjust their timing then huzzah! Photomotion! hee hee

The blanket is full of dreams and lovelies! and sleepies
  • eladbari 1 year ago
yeah..well..the whole deal is to learn the technique where it all takes u a second!
i mean...u drop the pictures...and Shazzam!-theyre all lined up, at the correct timing [lets say every picture=3 or 4 frames i guess], and u just add the music.
dropping it frame by frame would be horrific!

about the color correction. youre right...CC'ing each and every frame will give u more control, but you might create dis-continuity [is there sucha word? :] in the film, if some pictures [of the same "scene"] will be different in color\contrast..etc.

Just have a look at Magic Bullet Looks plugin.
Might be a little better than the normal FCP's "babyvomit" :] , and u could save some serious time...lets say..for drinking more Blue Moon Beer :]
  • Well the thing is I spend a lot of time on one photo of each scene and i make a preset, so essentially i can select all the photos and apply that preset and tweak each one when needed. The frame by frame thing was because my numbering system was vomit but as ben millett stated above I could've loaded a script. Now I know better and my workflow will be smoother.

Hahah I have Magic Bullet Looks...

I still prefer Lightroom for photographs though...god forbid I apply "Berlin" or "Film Damage" over the entire thing..hahah.

Actually for some reason I enjoy colour correcting with just the basic 3 way colour correction of FCP over all the plugins...I think when you know how to do something in relation to the bare minimum, you can cater that to your skill level. However for more important projects, I like to use Color. The babyvomit is in relation to the compression of rapid sequential images more than the colour.

Man how bout drink blue moons then edit. Haha college and editing was essentially a bottle of wine and Avid for hours.
  • eladbari 1 year ago
i salute u for using Avid. :] i would never step near that software....im too used to Premiere :\
    Avid seems too complicated.
Well...yeah...workflow is a tough nut to crack. but i guess everyone got his own personal method of working...i know i wish i could learn these softwares somewhere [Premiere\AE\Photoshop] ... then maybe i wouldnt have to trial & error for hours...and maybe my worflow would then be much shorter\smoother...and my final "product" would look better. :\

anyways...bout encoding...its kinda weird...since im pretty sure that videos that are made out of still images-will look the sharpest in any good encoding method. [according to what i see...photo slide shows & cartoons look the best-online...]
  • haha I actually found Avid to be easier to use than when I started learning Final Cut Pro or when I first used Premiere. Mostly i like the fun colour keyboard.

For some reason when I do photomotion and i upload to vimeo it looks not as awesome but I think that's pretty common with videos with lots of rapid motion...or something.

like this other photomotion i did

haha thanks for your kind words paul.

You're welcome. I really need to get out and put something together. I keep making excuses why I shouldn't get out and put a film together. lol
  •
  • Takin forever to buffffffffffffffer.
  • I'll buffer you..

    what does that even mean?

for some reason whenever i do photomotion on vimeo it looks like babyvomit compared to the original file, I think its because the frames are moving too fast or something...

    Ronco
    set it and forget it

    buff it out.
  • Keep it in your pants, Abad.

I still think it's hilarious that you're more creative than most people even when you don't have a motion camera.

    that's just fantastic.

    great vid.
  • haha thanks Ayz. I can't let my lack of resources stop me from creating or else I'll die. haha. beep beep I'm getting so antsy for your vids!!!! :-)

What I find hilarious is that I make more videos when I dont have a video camera then when i did. I'm just trying to compensate for something. Haha. Haha I like commenting to your comments just because it looks like you're wearing a blue dress and a black tie...hahaha Don't ever change your avatar!

I didn't shoot a thing last week. I wasted a whole 500mb of possibility. You've made me realizes I can always just go into the garden with a bunch of stuff and a still camera and find something interesting to tell.
  • haha I feel that way too, I feel that Vimeo encourages me to upload something new every week, but even that is really difficult to keep up with, to constantly produce new and different and interesting things.

Most of my videos were created out in and around my house, for fun.
  •

Very cool! I like your stop motion work.
  • Aww thanks Aaron...luckily for all of us my real stop motion stuff is way better than this sloppy photomotion stuff...maybe one day I'll be more serious and make some more real life stop motion that isn't so sloppy.

    :-)
  • Aaron Marshall plus 1 year ago
sloppy or not I think your motivation shines through which is the real magic

This video gives me warm fuzzy feelings. Thank you so much for sharing. You produce great work even when you don't feel so great. You have a wonderful gift and eye for capturing things beautifully. You are truly an inspiration.

Thank you for making me smile today. :)
  • That's awfully considerate of you to say. I really appreciate you and everyone taking the time to watch a lot of the pretty angsty repressed stuff I've been producing lately.

You make me smile for being so kind. Thank you

  • Is cool. Thanks buddy. I still use the bolex, for sure. :-) But I tend to spend more time planning for that instead of just up and shooting something.

Oh Karen Abad. Another great job. I read this little fact somewhere but did you know that supposedly the Brontosaurus never existed. I read somewhere within the past few years that all the brontosaurus remains were actually Brachiosausus remains just that the noce on their head I think wasnt fossilized properly or something? I dont know. I read it a few years back.. I love your videos as usual. PS, wy do you IM me every night at 9:05....or is it every morning at 9:05 ? =0)
  • Yeah it was a Brachiasaurus. It's okay bronty still lives in my heart
    forever.
