Three things that I love most about Madrid: The people know how to enjoy themselves; the gorgeous weather; and the ease of just walking or travelling around this beautiful city. Shot entirely on the Panasonic GH1. vimeo.com/channels/worldhd

Lots of diegetic sounds and background music from , Oscar Lopez - Gypsy Soul, Unforgettable - Imran Khan, Ottmar Liebert - Heart Still Beating and Black Eyed Peas - The Apl song, Accordian - Mera Juta hai Japani, Raj Kapoor's 'Shree 420'. Thanks to all the street entertainers and to the fantastic people of Madrid.

Cheers to the flashmob, supercool students of WOSAP, their talented choreographer, Alberto Lopez just advised me it was them dancing in the video in the heart Madrid, Puerta del Sol. Amazing how Vimeo has reached out to them in just 4 days! wosap.com

i found very interesting place through your clip .. now i need to think about vising madrid honestly ...
color look and scene selection is really amazing ..
so my understanding is you are using GH1 .. i do have GF1 as well just wondering is there any chance to use canon lenses on them ? what type of accessories basically you own along your camera ..
  • The Film Artist plus 1 year ago
Many thanks Hassan! You need a micro 4/3 system adaptor for the Panasonic G1, check out either one of these groups to ask for more specific help from members vimeo.com/groups/gh1 or vimeo.com/groups/panasonicgh1
The GH1 is pretty stable and many shots were handheld, all I used was a polariser filter and my camera bag to rest it on. I do have a small tripod aswell. I tried to use manual focussing where possible. I used the camera mic and the articulated LCD screen is simply priceless :)

Hey Artisto - well done! The images are so clean and bright, your camera angles unique (and sometimes askew :)... the best addition is your use of the ambient sounds! Now if we could just capture the sense of smell somehow. I noticed how you brought in audio from an upcoming clip, or vice versa - this make transitions smoother, and creates an overlapping montage of sight AND sound - well done!

My favorite is the accordion player - I love the way he plays repeated notes.
Thanks for sharing, always a pleasure to watch your work.

    Cheers, Paul
  • The Film Artist plus 1 year ago
Hey Paul, can you play the accordian? It's a great instrument, he was playing a rather famous old Raj Kapoor song from the 50's that is still very popular in China, Russia and Eastern Europe :) Thanks as always!
  • Paul Hamilton plus 1 year ago
Hey Artisto - yes that's me playing the accordion in my videos here. The guy in your video has a two octave accor.
I was looking to buy a Cortati, when my next door neighbor came over, we were talking, he found out I was looking, went back to his basement and pulled out the three octave accordion and lent it to me indefinitely. What's strange is that the accordion has the name "PAUL" emblazoned across the front - he bought it 10 years ago at an estate sale. WEIRD. Some call it "destiny."

Thanks for being a friend - I really enjoy all my video pen pals. P

  • You and I had two completely different experiences of Madrid, hehe. The atmosphere of your video is what I experienced in Barcelona. I went in the winter when all the trees were bare and icy cold winds were blowing through, so the feel of the city was very off, hehe. Great vibe going on in your video!
  • I agree, I live in Madrid since I was a kid and it is nothing like this video: the weather is too extreme and the city is very dirty... The video is great though.
  • The Film Artist plus 1 year ago
Many thanks Matthew! your video 'Sincerely Spain' is one of my all time favourites on Vimeo vimeo.com/10530896.

Thanks for the compliment Brutzelpretzel! We sure had a cold winter in Europe this year, I suppose there is always a difference in living and visiting a city. I love Madrid and the sunshine shone in all it's glory when I was there and the people rejoiced, so can't complain:)

Nice video, man! I like very much the grading you've done...
Only one little thing :), I wouldn't use that thumbnail for a video named "Love Madrid". That football players there are Xavi and Iniesta, and they both play for Barcelona, the team from the other big city in Spain, and sort of enemies for Real Madrid fans (NOT MY CASE, I am from another team, Atlético, and I feel closer to them than to Real Madrid, in fact)
Apart from this (maybe absurd), that is a GREAT VIDEO of my city (which I love/hate)
  • The Film Artist plus 1 year ago
Muchas Gracias Javier! :)) I had no idea about the photo, this was taken in the square 'Sol' and was automatically chosen as a thumbnail. I will change it for another one. Thanks for letting me know, phew!!! :)

I have to leave a comment to tell you I really enjoyed watching this. What and enjoyable, peaceful visit to Madrid for me :) I think the pacing of the first half, the time each shot lasts, and the variety of locations and people are really great. A series of little moments and observations is really what its like to visit a place, and you really captured that.

I enjoyed the coloring, I can see you're exploring various effects and film treatments. The sheer variety of effects was perhaps overkill in your previous "athens and santorini" video, so I have to commend you on maintaining some consistency and restraint in "Love Madrid." I'd say even go further and pull back on the glow in the last half.

Really fun to watch, I hope you take us on vacation again soon! :D
  • The Film Artist plus 1 year ago
Thank you so so much Jack! :) I tried to hard to capture video with more sound, stability and interest. Madrid has alot to see, the people really enjoyed the sunshine that weekend. It's easy to over colour, add your taste in music but you have to learn to discipline yourself and keep the viewer in mind. The GH1 is a great camera and provides a very crisp image but is not so good for panning fast shots due to the rolling shutter effect and requires little colour grading. The kit lens is very good in good light conditions and the shot of everyone at the beginning dancing was fully zoomed in at the back of a crowd of people with my hands held up high. The Athens video was taken 2 years ago on a HD camcorder which has a much softer image but great smoothness hence the excessive grading and effects. Factors such as light, lens and dof all play an important part not to mention post production. I was a little worried on the length of the film but my objective is for everyone to enjoy the experience of Madrid as much as they can. Your encouragement and feedback will help me reflect in my future work, muchas gracias :))

Leonardo, I think this is the greatest compliment I've had so far:) The accordian player at the beginning is playing the tune from an old Indian film song from the 1950s, Raj kapoor's 'Shree 420'. It is very famous across the world especially in Russia and China. In English it translates to 'my shoes are Japanese, my trousers are English, the red hat on my head Russian but even so, my heart in Indian'. I suppose your home is always where your heart is. Many thanks! :))

Yes, Raj Kapoor & Shree 420. I am sure you are aware what Shree 420 means, if not it means "Mr. Froude"

Never been to madrid but looks very similar in vibe to Barcelona. Makes me very nostalgic for it (and I didn't even go that long ago - want to go back with my new 550D now though). Beautiful film, and the music is amazing throughout. Where can I find spanish music for my itunes?
  • The Film Artist plus 1 year ago
Cheers Matt, this was from Spanish Guitar Hits Volume 2, I'm not sure if it's on itunes but Oscar Lopez and Ottmar Liebert are the 2 artists featured in the video and sound pretty good :) Whilst in Madrid I saw a group of school children sitting down on the grass learning to play the spanish guitar whilst teenagers in the park were practicing their dance. After watching your film '2 inches to the right' really does make you think :)

  • amber 1 year ago
what did you use to take it??
  • The Film Artist plus 1 year ago
Panasonic GH1, it takes photos and high definition video, there are many other good cameras and cheaper alternatives which will give you a similar result :)
  • amber 1 year ago
    thank you :]
im thinking of buying a camera.
i just dont know which would be better.
  • The Film Artist plus 1 year ago
I would decide a budget and consider what you would be using the camera for dpreview.com go to this site and read some reviews, maybe a HD camcorder maybe your best bet for fluid HD video, DSLRs are great for quality and static images difficult for panning shots. I like the Canon prosumer range and the Panasonic micro 4/3rds range. Useability is also important for me and an articulated LCD screen. The G2 is out soon but quite expensive. Just remember it's not the camera but the photographer that makes a good film. Hope this helps:)
