I wanted another thunderstorm to shoot this week and I finally got it. The resulting video is some of the coolest I've ever shot. Watch the rain roll in.

Hi Chris -- that certainly is some fearsome weather.

The cloud and rain sequence that starts around 0:13 is marvelous. As Benjamin Franklin says: "Don't take your kite out in weather like this".
  • Chris 4 months ago
Very true though it isn't all that scary when it happens on an almost daily basis here. Thanks!

Awesome, I like the waterstreams at 00:45, is that realtime?
  • Chris 4 months ago
Thanks but no, the water streams are sped up.
  • Martijn Doornenbal 4 months ago
Ah, very cool shot, a lot of water is coming down...
  • Chris 4 months ago
    It rained... a lot!

Great video! Another question: the waterdrops at 0:33: how did you shoot this, a special high shutterspeed?
  • Chris 4 months ago
Thanks! For the water drops, I just set the camera on the ground, zoomed way in and manually adjusted the focus to where the drops were falling. The camera was in shutter mode set to 500.

Thanks, I'm thinking of buying a HV30, which would also be capable of similar videos as the HV20.

  • Chris 4 months ago
Yeah, this is definitely an amazing camera.

Good stuff! Those clouds are ominous. I love the video of the rain drops, close up.
  • Chris 4 months ago
    Thanks. That's my favorite too.

What a nice weather catch. Lovely mix of time lapse and real time close ups. You must keep up your nose in the air all day long. Do you sell umbrellas overthere?
  • Chris 4 months ago
I should sell umbrellas. But no I just felt like making videos this week and weather is a beautiful, constantly changing subject that everyone can appreciate.

I do hate rain man, rainman :)
  • Chris 4 months ago
Aw, what's to hate about rain? Rain is great!

In Spain we say Guau! Que paciencia! Realmente chulo!

Cool! I think you have another microphone for sound isn't it?
  • Chris 4 months ago
Can you translate? Sadly, I do not know Spanish. But they do sound like compliments, so thank you. And no, that's actually the built-in mic on the camera. Not much editing beyond level adjustments either.
  • Quiquín 4 months ago
Sorry... my english is a little bit poor.
I think is: Wow! Your very patient! really cool!
I think the next I will buy is a mic thought the sound is very clear in your video.
I hope you are in a protect place.
  • Chris 4 months ago
I see. Yes, it does require a lot of patience. Especially the cloud time lapse videos I've done. I try to shoot what I can from the foyer outside my apartment — but I still have to wipe off the lens a lot.
  • Quiquín 4 months ago
Thanks a lot for reply. I hope to post early a video and I hope to stay at level.(I don't konw if my english is totaly correct, but I think you are being patient with me...as with the clouds, hahahaha!)
    Good Shots!

No problem. I think I understand what you're trying to say. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thanks! I thought it came out all right.

Good video Chris. Looks like this year will be a lot better than last year for capturing the rain and clouds. You get more severe stuff in the Cape than in Bonita!

    Keep up the good work!
  • Chris 4 months ago
No kidding, especially this afternoon. Tornado and everything. Too bad I couldn't catch that on camera. Thanks for the compliments!
  • Tom Kvichak 4 months ago
I saw that on the news this evening, pretty scary! Was in FMB this afternoon watching the clouds building up wishing I brought my camera.
  • Chris 4 months ago
Yeah luckily that was all on the other end of the Cape from me. So... were you watching FOX 4 News? ;)
  • Tom Kvichak 4 months ago
    No, actually WINK ;-
  • Chris 4 months ago
Well, that's okay too. My fiancee is a producer there.

If the mood strikes again, I'll surely make some more. But I need to find a new location or at least think of some new shots.

Very good shots Chris, I love timelapse too, did you use a dispositive for it or you made it hand shot by shot? The streams are interesting sensation.
  • Chris 3 months ago
Thanks, Monica. I'm not sure what you're asking but the time lapse shots were simply made by speeding up about five minutes worth of video.
