what a strange opening shot.... I could watch that for a long time....made me feel drunk and infantile.

yes, he was really enjoying walking without anyone holding his hand, but he was pretty erratic!

I agree on the 1:26 comment. I also really like your low angle on the yellow flowers and awesome shallow depth of field. Beautiful family!

Thank you Todd! This is the first thing I've made since getting a DOF adapter for my HV20. I really like it so far, but it can be hard to use since it inverts the image on the LCD display.
  • Jon F 4 months ago
im jw what dof adapter did you get?
  • Matt Taylor 4 months ago
I got it from Two Neil! Here's a link to his profile:

Oh, and I liked the "Bark!" graphic - a nice touch.

I don't know if you consider yourself one, but that was every bit as good as a professional's work! Very imaginative and impressive. I give it 5 *****'s !
  • Matt Taylor 4 months ago
Thanks, that is SO awesome to hear. I don't consider myself a professional and I've never edited anything for money, but I would love to one day do it for a living!

Right now I work at a factory making paper-towels, so editing film/video for a living would be like a dream come true!

First of all, I loved your video. And it was very well editied. I am going to save it. However you had a few shots that were out of focus and that seems to be a style some are using. I always thought DOF was for controlling where one wants the eye to go in the frame. Just having the entire shot out of focus does not make any sense to me. However, that may be a style that people like. It is obvious you have talent and I really did like your video. Your little boy is SO cute and the music fit perfectly.
  • Matt Taylor 4 months ago
    Roger, thank you!

Being the first time I used the DOF adapter I ended up with a lot of throw-away footage that was out of focus or off-center. While editing though I did find that I liked to throw an entirely out of focus bit in here and there. I'm not sure why, I think maybe just because it seemed to make it feel more spontaneous or "off-the-cuff", but it wasn't something I originally planned to do and if I was more adept with the adapter I'm sure I wouldn't have put any blurry bits like that in.

    Thanks again!

I just recently found out that the sound was out of sync on some of the video files I posted and Vimeo's encoding process resycronized the sound.

So anyone who was downloading them would be watching the audio out of sync. If you did download it, sorry about that! It should be fixed now.

I know this was from a while back, but I remembered you saying you were going to download it! :)

Not often I enjoy seeing videos of other peoples' kids. Let's face it, most of the time it just isn't that interesting. Important point being: I DID enjoy it this time.

    Great work. Great talent.

Matt. Great job. Like so many others, I really enjoyed watching this family video. The editing and music syncing was great, and fun. I didn't mind the focusing, or out of focusing at all. I also liked the dark dog that barks. Very similar to my old dog that I had to put down last year - boo hoo. What sort it is? Can you also let us in on what camera and software you used please? Again, awesome. Beats just having a few photos to look at!
  • Matt Taylor 4 months ago
    Thanks Dan!

The dog, Nacho, is my sister's and according to her Nacho is perhaps a rottweiler/lab mix, but shes not really sure!

I used an HV20 for all of the footage, some of it with a depth of field adapter I purchased from TwoNeil and most of it with the camera mounted on a monopod. I did all of the editing in After Effects.

How do you do that awesome focusing in AE?
I mean.... For example 2:00. It's just too awesome!!
  • Matt Taylor 4 months ago
That was actually achieved from the use of the depth of field adapter I purchased for the HV20. It really allows you to isolate the attention on one subject.

Although it is possible, I didn't apply any "focusing" effects in AE.

How did you get the camera so low so that you could film the boy in the beginning like that?
  • Matt Taylor 4 months ago
I had the camera on a monopod, which is basically just a stick that the camera mounts on the end of and I held it down at ground level pointing up towards my son, Gage, as I walked backwards. You can flip the lcd view finder up, so you can kind of track where your filming, but if it's very sunny, it can be hard to see. Also, the footage comes out upside down because the camera is upside down while doing this, so it needs to be flipped before editing. The same thing can also be done with a tripod with all of the legs collapsed!

Here is a great tutorial by Charlie McCarthy about this technique:

    vimeo.com/453536

It's where I got the idea from!

All of the footage was shot with a Canon HV20 and about half of it was shot with a 35mm depth-of-field adapter attached that I purchased from a nice guy called TwoNeil who can be found here:
