The American Toad spends most of its time on land, but returns to the water to breed. The male toads establish territories in the water and call to the females. If a female chooses a male, he will latch on to her and fertilize the eggs. The female toad can lay 4000-8000 eggs in two spiral rows of jelly. When the rows are stretched they can measure anywhere from 6 to 20 meters.
