After watching "The Strangers," Fellow Vimean Michael Brodner put a challenge out to the community. He explained the rules saying, "Take a basic 30 second shot, combine it with some really awesome sound and make it terrifying."

Here's my attempt at Michael Brodner's "scare" challenge. Unfortunately I broke the first rule right out the gate - running time. I'm hoping he'll forgive me.

The footage was shot on my Canon HV30 using the twoneil 35mm adapter with a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D lens. Editing was done using a combination of Adobe After Effects and Premiere CS3.

Dang Clan! That was creepy! Especially the voice over of your daughter...very exorcist-like!!!

What kind of tripod do you use?
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
Hahaha... yeah, I actually got the idea of putting in my daughter's voice (in reverse) from a user comment on another one of my videos. :-) As for the tripod, I use to cheap, rinky-dink Velbon.

Bravo!!!!! You knew I would Like this one!! I really need to try this!!
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
You TOTALLY need to do this. I mean... I guess technically you kind of already have with your abandon house videos, but it'd still be cool to see something new.
  • Did somebody say "abandon houses?" hmmmmm...sounds amazingly scary :) Let's see it Kev!
  • Kevhead101 2 years ago
    Michael,
Here is one that McCloud is referring to.

Hey, that was my advice to run the audio backwards! Someone listens! Woohoo!
Seriously though...nicely done (but to make it fit the rules, just use the last 30 seconds). Here's another tip for even creepier results, tilted angles and hand held footage. Aaaaand...go!
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
Absolutely! Thanks for the tip. In fact, if you scroll up a couple posts you'll see that someone referred to the voices and I gave you props. I'll take into consideration angles and handheld for the next one. :-)

    That was GREAT!

Did you do all the sound stuff yourself, or was some of that sourced elsewhere?
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
I recorded water droplets, slamming doors, ticking clocks, and my daughters voice for the sfx. As for the music, I spliced and diced peices of The Grudge soundtrack and timed it to my shots.

haha scaryyy!! honestly the creepy music in horror movies are what make them frightening. love the door shot
  • Clan McCloud plus 1 year ago
Thanks, michael. I was pretty happy with the door shot too. Would've been nice if the light was pouring out a little more though.

I'm so impressed by your sound montage. I keep reading over and over again that movies are 90% about the sound, and this is a great example of that. For a fun comparison, you could try showing the same footage with, say, "The Theme from A SUMMER PLACE" playing, see how it feels.

Not that the visuals weren't brilliant, too - the classic tension mounting as you go up the staircase, the mystery of the backlit door that is ajar... All perfectly done!
  • Clan McCloud plus 1 year ago
You know... I just may try that! Sounds like a fun little challange to take this video and really try to change the mood by swapping the soundtrack.
  •
  • Jonathan Hayes 1 year ago
The only problem is that you've so totally nailed the challenge them that I'm sure it'll defuse people's desire to participate!
  • Clan McCloud plus 1 year ago
    You're too kind, sir!

  • Stefano Dooijes 1 year ago
Cool, gave me the chills. You should make a longer horror film :P
  • Clan McCloud plus 1 year ago
Too bad we live in different countries... It be great to collaborate! I've got an idea I'm tossing around but it's just so difficult to get everything together to actually make it happen, ya know?
  • Stefano Dooijes 1 year ago
Yeah, would be really cool to make something togetha!
Who knows Clan , it's not IMPOSSIBLE if you think about it, even though we live in different countries. Tell me about your idea, you made me curious.

Terrifying it is! My god you must have a great camera to. Good job!!! :D
  • Clan McCloud plus 1 year ago
Thanks, Christiaan. It was a nice excercise trying to make something scary out of some rather unscary footage.

  • Sugoi 1 year ago
You should continue that and make a mini movie.
    Well done :)
Excuse me while I go and change my underwear :P
  • Clan McCloud plus 1 year ago
Thanks, sugoi. It was a fun little experiment putting this together. Maybe if I could think of a way to flesh this out a bit more with some sort of story, I may revisit it.
