Most phones come with flimsy manuals with complicated language and jargon. These books, which can live on a bookshelf actually contain the phone.
Each page reveals the elements of the phone in the right order, helping the user to set up the sim card, the battery and even slide the case onto the phone.

The second book is the main manual – the phone actually slots into this and becomes the center of attention.
Arrows point to the exact locations the user should press, avoiding confusion and eliminating the feeling of being lost in a menu.

Nice concept but how necessary is a large manual in these days of on-screen tutorials? Isn't it just extra bulk, weight and unnecessary resource usage?
  • Easy to say if you're familiar with on-screen tutorials or even smart phones in general. If the cell phone I bought my grandmother came with one of these she probably would have actually learned how to use the phone.

"Isn't it just extra bulk, weight and unnecessary resource usage?"

    - Not if it replaces the need for packaging which would only get thrown away anyway

  • Looks very nice but we should be thinking ways to use less paper. Definitely out of the box though.

I use extra paper just to counter the eco nuts that say things like this.

Nice concept. If a real product spend this much time on a user-friendly packaging, they should probably start on making the actual product more user-friendly. Which in turn defeat the purpose of this packaging concept, I suppose.

Yes, it's a chicken and egg situation! - our intention was to try and make an existing mass manufactured product usable.

Really interesting concept. Would love to see this applied for car manuals i.e tomes that need to be more hands on and visual.

  • that's an absolutely fantastic and enriching experience in the world of user guides. there's a thing that reached my eyes and raised me a doubt: is there a lorem ipsum dummy text on the end of the manual? why is it there? was it a design choice to not leave the pages blank?

Hi Guilherme, thanks for your comment, and well spotted!
Yes there is some dummy text at the back, but only because this is a design prototype, we completed the instructions up to a certain point to test the concept, but didn't explain every function in the phone. The text was just to make the appearance and feel as close to a finished manual as possible.
