This is a prototype of a 3D sky browser. Galaxies are displayed as scaled quads. The screen is aligned to the plane of the sky and the deep corresponds to redshift.
The tiling engine is an improvement of the 2D tiling engines used in services like google sky and world wide telescope. Here the tiling can be done in 3D and include also 3D metadata.
All the astrometry, images, etc are based on NVO services. The movie shows realtime interaction. Galaxy images are retrieved from the SDSS server and chached to disk. The background image is X-ray rosat also from NVO and cached to disk. The original code runs on 3D stereo.
Code written in processing.
