85. Do It Yourself - Large ZaZa Slider - Glidetrack
1 year ago
This is my attempt at showing you how I made my 20-80 Igus - ZaZa Slider. The steps will be the same if you are using the smaller 16-60 rail.

In the end I did put a quick connect plate on the end as one stopper and wheels on the other end for easy portability. This rail is massive and it gets a lot of attention when I'm shooting with it. If you plan on shooting in public, plan on getting a lot of questions about how people can get one of these.

If you have questions please contact me at info@bigboxpro.com.

    Nice Job and Thankyou!!!!!!
  •
  • Thanks for everyone's kind words.

Keep in mind this is the setup for a big camera rig. If you are shooting with a medium sized camera or a DSLR then you can use the 16-60 rail and it will be perfect for you.

I looked on the site at the parts that I need but there is no place to order it (that I can find). How do I go about ordering from them. Do they have set prices. It looks like you call and they quote. Does anyone have the pricelist.....I don't wanna be charged any more that anybody else :-)
  •
  • Call them. They are great on the phone and they are starting to know what the Zaza slider is. They will also tap the holes for an extra charge.

How did you get IGUS to send you a 5 foot rail? I have the 1000mm version (little over 3 feet) and I called to order a 2000mm version for longer dolly shots. The guy on the phone said they can't UPS something that long. Is 5 foot the longest they can send?
  • I had a question as to how many feet Igus is willing to ship via UPS. I just called and ordered up my 1500mm rail and they shipped it out the next day. 1500 Millimeters = 4.9212 Feet. It shipped in a long square tube. I'm not sure what their limit is. I know if you show up to the factory they will sell you a 12 footer if you like.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for sharing that slider idea. I often do location shoots where a dolly is prohibitive and a Steadicam too expensive. I would like to simply add a bit of tracking motion here and there. I expect to get a new Pana Varicam 2700 in a few weeks, and would like to see how I can make one of these rails for it. Great job on the video. I am a big-time do-it-yourselfer since I restore old cars for a hobby. The girl with the '61 E-Type at Keels & Wheels is a friend of mine. I recently sold my '66 E-type (jagxke.wordpress.com/)

Just a friendly word of advice on your shop techniques. I would advise you getting an actual center-punch from Lowes rather than using a scratch awl. You need to slow your drill press way down when drilling metal...looks like you have it fast for wood. Always first drill a 1/8th inch pilot hole....it's much more accurate and will stay inside the relatively tiny center mark.

Thanks again for the heads up on the Igus rail.

  • I just talked with your friend on the phone. If you like the Jags take a look at vimeo.com/5865136. You might be in it. In fact, I think your Jaguar E-Type (XKE) made for some really nice video.

Thanks for the shop advice. I woodwork all the time and wish I had someone to teach me metal shop. Good luck on the Pana Varicam, it should be nice.

    Enjoy

How much does it cost to put together one of the smaller ones?
  • Anywhere from 200 to 300 will get you a nice setup for the smaller rails.

This was a great video! I have a quick question - Could you recommend a tripod head for a Panasonic HMC-150?
  •
  • Alexander Volek 7 months ago
Hey great video! Does anyone have any idea how this can be adjusted to fit on a Miller Arrow 40 head? The head has a 100mm bowl that cant be taken off and the 100mm bowl sits in a cradle on the tripod and screws in so it can be leveled. So basicly I cant just screw the head to the carriage because its got "male" end instead of a "female" end and there is no way to mount the track to the tripod because its just a bowl reciver heres a link to what I have

  •
  • You should be able to tap the hole and screw in your head right to the base plate. I would use a 3 of 4 inch riser column.

hi, I've built about the same slider about a month ago; Came across your video today.

Few questions... Why do you thread the hole on the carriage to mount the head? You can just drill a regular hole and use the threads in the head to tighten it to the plate.

As a further enhancement i drilled a second hole in the carriage (which i did thread) to secure the head with 2 points. This way, if i pan the head, i have no risk of the head coming loose.

But anyways, clear video. Should have seen this when i was making mine!
  •
  • I like the idea of two bolts to lock in the head. I tap the carriage so I lower tolerances for wiggle room.

This month I am adding a gear motor to the project. I will post that video when it is ready.
