a tom tom club sample, or did tom tom sample them?
  • Kirsten Lepore 3 years ago
grandmaster sampled the tom tom club. Actually, there have been a ton of artists who have sampled this tomtom song....cuz it's so gooood.

Great job! I thoroughly enjoyed this!

Reminded me of how they end all their commercials with the warning that the games pieces don't actually talk.

lol, don't thank me. How long did it take for you to make that? It only took me thirty seconds to tell ya it was awesome. =)
  • Kirsten Lepore 3 years ago
Haha, well I appreciate the compliments! The piece took about a week to make.

Okay Okay, point taken ... =)

Though I'm a little embarrassed by the redundancy of smiley faces I've had in this thread.

  • Will Sandercock 3 years ago
awesome! if i may ask, how did you go about animating their mouths?
  • Kirsten Lepore 3 years ago
I shot all the main movement with a camera stop-motion style, and then photoshopped out the mouths/eyes and re-animated them in flash. I didn't know aftereffects at the time, but if I had to do it again I'd probably use that.

That was totally amazing. It brought back some old memories of the game. I wouldn't ever verse you though, I'm ALWAYS the red, and by the looks of your video, you prefer that side too. :) Well Done.
  • Kirsten Lepore 3 years ago
haha, yea you wouldn't want to verse me, I'm pretty good at this game...I know all these characters by heart (from working on the animation!)

This is ace - was the syncing with the music tricky? Well done!
  • Kirsten Lepore 3 years ago
thanks! Wasn't too tricky since I imported the audio into Flash (when I composited the mouths). So I was able to animate right along with the audio.
  • iamkeir 3 years ago
Thanks for replying - I actually meant was it hard to get all the right frames to match the music when you were capturing them? Must have taken some real planning? I think I must have a go at this kind of thing myself to get a better feel for it! Love Dig too, great work. Best wishes.

    wow what a video!

i know and love the music of grandmaster flash but i am from germany and don't know the game. how does it called?

    best wishes from berlin, germany
  • Kirsten Lepore 3 years ago
Ahh! I've always wanted to go to Berlin...the closest I've come is Dinkelsbühl, haha. The game is actually called "Guess Who" (the title of the animation)...I'm not sure if the game had a German version, but I know there was an identical italian version called "Indovina chi"...hehe.

just watched it again. I would love to know how to do something like this, but I don't know where to start. Again, great job!
  • Kirsten Lepore 3 years ago
Thanks Rebecca! Glad you liked it!
Surprisingly it didn't take that long to make...it just required a lot of compositing. I shot all the flipping up and down of the characters stop-motion style, and then went back later and composited all the mouths so it would sync with the music.

this is completely totally freaking amazing. you get, like, a hundred points. i really want to play now. why hasn't someone done a cheeky online version of guess who huh? like with the real characters. cos it's not the same unless you have bill and anita and sam and max and claire. oh and you're on the tumblr radar via mark (above) in case you didn't know.

    that is all. x

Genius h christ. I haven't played Guess Who in years but I still see people who remind me of the characters. Were I a wealthy man I'd recruit them all for a giant real life version of the game. And instead of just flipping them down, I'd shoot them dead with an antique pistol.

I'm sure you've been getting comments on this for months now, which has probably caused you to turn off notifications, but I just have to say how great this is. How did you do such steady tilt animation on the tiles? In other words, how did you keep them from falling completely over when you were tilting them up and down to show movement. Also, was the face movement done post or during, cause that is so smooth!
  • Kirsten Lepore 3 years ago
Nah, I always appreciate a compliment! Glad you liked it!
I actually used clear tape behind the tiles to control their position, haha -- very makeshift. The face movements, however, I did all in post. I photoshopped out the features and then composited them back in while doing the lip sync. Actually, I have an image on flickr of a before and after of one of the faces:

That's very cool. The Photoshopping process definitely gives you some good animation in terms of expression. It looks great!
