Animated characters Christopher and Toni introduce viewers to eleven graphic novels in eleven minutes: Charles Burns' Black Hole, Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, Will Eisner's Contract with God, Art Spiegelman's Maus, Neil Gaiman's Sandman v. 4, David B's Epileptic, Alissa Torres's American Widow, Alison Bechdel's Fun Home, Alan Moore's Watchmen, Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and Adrian Tomine's Shortcomings. The banter between straight-laced Charles and party-girl Toni makes for entertaining viewing while also providing clever and often brilliant insight into the works they address. The video plays on the conventions of academic prose and television productions like Masterpiece theater couched in the witty visual style pioneered by Ben Crowshaw.
This is a useful and entertaining introduction to the literary end of the graphic novel spectrum.
The video was created by Christopher Ducharme, Toni Zakarija, Whitney Lloyd, Daniel Price, Alexandra Fenzel, Kellie Arendt, Matthew Grebe, and Phillip Bridge for Robin Valenza's Graphic Novel course at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
