November 1, 1990 an important day for Alberta’s Metis. Her Honor, Lieutenant Governor, Helen Hunley and Premier Don Getty signed Letters Patent, granting ownership of one and quarter million acres to the Metis Settlements General Council. Four acts were proclaimed – the Metis Settlements Land Protection Act, says the land’s ownership can’t be taken away; the Metis Settlements Act sets up their self government; the Metis Settlements Accord Implementation Act to make sure there is enough money to do the job and lastly, the Alberta Constitution was amended - the rights and obligations of the new system were entrenched. For the first time the province’s eight Metis Settlements have a full and complete say on how they are governed and how their resources are developed. We now join Alberta’s Minister Responsible for Native Affairs, the Honorable Ken Rolstad
