This 10-week project was created for my Visual Effects Studio II class at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and as such, was the final project of my undergrad career.

It is entirely based off of a webcomic by the same name, drawn by the genius of Dave Kellett (also known for his other strip, Sheldon). He was kind enough to give permission for anyone to digitally recreate the world of Drive, and I've taken him up on his offer.

For those who are curious, I used Maya 2009 for modeling, Photoshop for textures, Vue 8 for the sky backgrounds, Mental Ray and Maya Software for the rendering, and Nuke for compositing.

And a bonus for this being a school project: I was able to use the SCAD renderfarm. Nothing like having a couple hundred computers to speed up rendering.

The sequence I've created is loosely based off a series of strips within the comic itself (yes, the characters really are at a Denny's in the comic), and I've taken a few creative liberties with the ships... overall it has been one of the most exciting projects I've ever worked on.

But enough about me. If you haven't yet read Drive or Sheldon, they are absolutely top-level comics and I recommend you check them out as soon as possible:
