Trude describes her escape from Bratislava in 1939 as a child of 9. She left with her aunt and cousin for a gruelling 4-day train journey across Europe with the frequent threat of arrest.
Finally they arrived in London and spent their first few days in a boarding house. Trude remembers the strangeness of her new home, particularly the little mouse that used to appear on her bedside table each night.
