This is one of the last evenings before me and the five others return to the states. For so many years my knowledge of our mission partnership with Slovakia has been focused on the church we help to build in Nitra and the Bible College and dormitories we helped to refurbish in Martin. These are great stories worth celebration and part of Our Saviour’s mission history. But there is a new story being written. And it’s all about the kids in Slovakia.
This is probably not a stretch for you to imagine, but I preferred hanging in the classroom with the children than hanging with the mayor of the city. The kids are amazing. Their English rocks!!! My Slovakian does not! There is so much joy and excitement in the classrooms it is simply contagious. And, at first I took that for granted. I mean ... c’mon, all kids laugh and have a good time in school. Right? Wrong! Parents pay the tuition to send their kids to the elementary school on the CCE campus even though they could go to public school for free. Why? It’s the atmosphere of this Christian elementary school that is worth paying for. The children are being taught by people who love Jesus. Bohdan Hroboň and the other entrepreneurial leaders of the CCE have assumed the responsibility of training and influencing the next generation of Christian thinkers and leaders.
250 children attend the elementary school. Administration has to turn down close to 200 children a year because of space limitations. And every year they add a new grade (next year it is 7th grade) and pray the classroom space will be available.
Now, my job and the team of people who went have been given the task to tell the story to others. And there’s much more to tell. But for now, when it comes to our mission partners in Slovakia, the message is simply this … “It’s all about the kids!”
