I hit the road and travelled up the famous north Antrim coast road. The weather was so random with heavy showers separated by spells of sunshine.

This is a version of North Coast in Northern Ireland with a bit of time spent on grading in FCP. I also cured a few of the shaky tripod issues with the smooth cam effect in FCP.

This was my first day using the Canon XHA1 camera and also working with a HD camera. I am still getting used to the increased need of accuracy while focusing.

Hope you enjoy. Send me your comments

You got some great shots. I love the colors. Are you using a filter, or was it done during editing?

Thanks Paul, I had a gradiated ND filter on the camera, but i also added to this in post.

awesome footage! you have a great eye. love the pace of the piece. did you use any DOF adapters? i look forward to more hd videos from you!!

That has some nice rich colors. So the ND filter gave you those effects?
And as Elliott asked, did you use any DOF adapters for some of the shots?
  • Andy Yoong plus 1 year ago
I didn't use any DOF adaptors. i just opened the aperture up wide and got in close. Some of the shots have faux DOF added in post. The colours/grading were added in post as well, but the filter with the gradient helps keep the exposure right in the skys.

When working on the colours I thought they might have been a bit overkill but I am happy with the results.

Very good, I like the grading, but the orange vignette is at some points a little bit too much, especially in the sky. But I like the colors of your footage! Well done!

Thanks for the feedback. I thought this myself but its good to hear what other people think.

Great angles and great framing, Excellent job. Can you give some pointers to noobs as to what is involved in "color grading"? Thanks.
  • Andy Yoong plus 1 year ago
You should do a bit of searching online. There is alot of info out there. It's good to learn about histograms/vectorscopes etc to be able to keep everything in check. I think lynda.com might have some tutorials that could help. Basically grading is giving the video the look you want. Think of it as photoshop for video with a bit more to it. I used final cut pro which allows you to add a number of effects to each clip.

Great footage, dig the music. I agree with Martijn, sometimes the orange vignette got a little old shot-after-shot, but your interesting perspective and depth in the shots made up for it. The simple shots of the grasses and roads give me something to think about during my next shoot. What music is it, if you don't mind me asking? :)

Cheers for the feedback Justin. Sometimes its hard to see your own videos from a fresh point of view when you have spent a while editing and grading them. The next video i create i will try a different look and will probably not nail it either! The track is One Evening by Feist.

Just a tad heavy on the grading, in my opinion..but it does stand out in a "Miami CSI" kind of way. The colorist on that one made a point of overdoing the saturation in order to 'stop viewers from changing the dial'. Some great shots for sure, and the neutral grad was a smart addition to bring out the richness of the sky. Well done!

I think the gradient filter works "awesomely" in pretty much all of the shots with the sky... which is why you slapped it on in the first place. But, alot of the other shots somewhat suffered thru the same effect... although they were interesting enough to make the cut nonetheless. I gotta believe it's a major pain in the arse to constantly pop it on and off though... unless you're goin' for a real big time investment to do a top notch (free for the hell of it) video.

I like your work, beautiful colours, depth DOF, fine images, what kind of preset did you use?

I'm nearly sure this was standard. The Carrickfergus video was reality

Great stuff! Tell you what though, the shots are so 'majestic' I'd love to see it again with some film soundtrack or orchestral music to support the 'grandness' of both the scenery and the shots.

  • Andy Yoong plus 1 year ago
I had a gradient ND filter on the front of the camera and used magic bullet looks to grade it

Great film and camera work, but I have to agree with other posters, the grading needs to be turned back a notch.
