This is a short animated film produced at the University of Hertfordshire for our final degree project and is the result of 3 months of pre-production and 5 months of production.

The film centres around a man looking for an illusive phoenix feather to complete his collection, but after an unfortunate encounter finds himself in need of help. Even after the utmost sacrifice of the phoenix, the man's lust for greed triggers the phoenix's magnificent rebirth through his soul.

This looks very nice. Its too bad about the animation. It really kills it for me. It needs more natural motion. The 12 principles of animation are a necessity.

    Could you elaborate please?

I think what he was referring to is: "12 basic principles of animation" theory.

I wish I had the skills to do something like that. But it sure is difficult to get the human animation right, hunh? Looked like the animation for a "Barbie" movie, which, having small granddaughters, I've seen a lot of. That, by the way, is a compliment, and a criticism. But it is my opinion that if the animation isn't exactly right, then a viewer is often unable to suspend disbelief. But you guys are well on your way!

Thanks again guys, and fair points. Regretably with the short deadline we couldn't spend as much time on animation as we'd have liked. The animator joined about half way through, and we spent a lot of time having to re-cut shots to sort narrative out. This is also why we took the decision to use a lot of 2d comping effects, with only the man, phoenix and ship being the 3D elements. We may revisit some parts that need work and hopefully I will have some breakdowns up soonish.

For those who are interested we had a running blog:

    evolfilm.blogspot.com/

for the development of the artwork and visual style.

Brilliant stuff. Have to agree on the animation, but still, it's awesome.

You have a solid story, but it could have been told better. But considering time and your animator joined half way through it's fairly well told. I didn't understand it the first time, but did after I read the description. I got the whole "good bird" and "rebirth" thing.

But still, fantastic shots, feeling and just brilliant work!

I'm curious - what did he take out of his pocket in the beginning? A blinking eye? A metaphor for a camera? What?

I think this is awesome. I find it interesting that there are critical comments pertaining to your project, yet there are some laughably ridiculous other videos which are praised on high. (would not dare name them, as I was criticized for being critical!).

Your piece shows great promise. Good luck. The truth is that if it was on tv, kids would be glued to it.

At the beginning his eye is reflected in a sexton which he drops to his side before he paces the ship.

I do love seeing the critical comments as much as the praise. This film's development saw lots of criticism which was acted upon to make the final result better, and it does help in the creative process, even after the film has been finished.
