81. Sao Miguel - the Azores
UPDATE: There is now an ungraded version available: vimeo.com/12448634

May 2010, I spent 11 days on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores. It was supposed to have been 15 days but the volcanic ash from Iceland shot down the airport in Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel). So, the first four days of my vacation were spent waiting / hoping for change, in Lisbon.

I love planning vacations and this vacation had been 'underway' for over a year. I use Google maps / Google Earth to 'scout' locations (see: pixelviking.com/blog/2010/2/17/sao-miguel-azores-here-i-come.html), so 75% of everything you see in this video is from locations that I found via the Panoramio images in Google Earth. The rest are chosen 'on location'.

I chose to stay at Furnas Lake Villas furnaslakevillas.pt after seeing their website. Who wouldn't enjoy that? Well, I did anyway... :)

Had I had the extra money, I would have rented a bigger car than the small Nissan Micra, which turned out to be too small for the gravel roads, especially since the winter had been very wet and the roads were in bad condition. I could of course just have stayed on the 'real' roads but what's the fun in that :)

---

I hope these 9 minutes and 28 seconds don't feel too long. I did my best to push the camcorder to its limits and the work in post also went beyond what I've ever done before. I hope that you at least get a good idea about what there is to see in this 'almost' paradise...

Very very nice. Would be nice to break it up a bit with different grading for example.

  • Magnificent!

I love the images, film and edit and the fact you made it a widescreen format. But agree with the comment about grading.

I loved that. How did you do your titles - pin sharp!
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 1 year ago
    Thanks.

I'm not sure just how specific you want the answer but all titles start fading in 12 frames after the clip's cross-fade has ended and end the fade-out the same frame that a new clip's cross-fade begins - if that makes sense.

The clips / scenes are (almost) all six seconds long - the cross-fades last 36 frames. I count frames when I edit and rarely edit to the music. I need a much faster PC, before I can edit like that.

You don´t need a fast computer to edit with the music. Turn off all the video and mark the time of the music. Next you can synchronize the video with the marks.
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 1 year ago
    True, that is possible.

I just want to edit with full resolution video quality when editing :). That wish might just come true this week, when my new video editing PC arrives (courtesy of my employer). It's a 6 core Extreme monster: pixelviking.com/links/

    That should be fun... :p

hey, i am portuguese and i have been a couple of times in Açores, and in S. miguel.
It is a really beautiful island and i think your video shows it in "full beauty".
In my mind Açores are green, but the colors you gave it go really well with it's mood!!!
    Wonderful!
    =)

Finding info via the Panoramio images in Google Earth is certainly a very good method.
Yet there was one piece of crucial information about the Azores climate you missed: precipitation in Furnas is 2,500 mm a year, cloud cover and humidity, accordingly.
Furnas is a paradise to visit but, together with Sete Cidades, it has the worst climate of Sao Miguel for a hotel.
See my videos (shot the same time as yours) for the best climate of the Azores to stay, just a few miles southwest from Furnas (from Ribeira das Tainhas, just east of Vila Franca do Campo, until Caloura), where it rains 25% as much as in Furnas and the sun shines twice as long.

Interesting. However, it only really rained one of the days and that only lasted about an hour. 'Weather' comes and goes very fast in Sao Miguel.

Wow! Cool geo-scouting. It shows in the results, ie. it's 9 minutes long but it just keeps on delivering throughout. I think the music really delivered it for me. I liked it. I gave it a good part of my attention. It set a good pace. And the pictures kept delivering. Very meditative. It's simultaneously landscape photography, travelogue, and showcase for the Azores. Very beautiful.
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 1 year ago
Thanks, Brad. That's exactly what I wanted it to be.

The music represents me (a lot) more than it does Sao Miguel but I felt it had a perfect pace for my images and pace-wise it went very well with the experience I had there.

Sao Miguel can be both extremely slow (siesta in the small towns) and extremely hectic (people driving like crazy on the narrow and winding roads).

The clarinet (if that's what it is) represents the people who honked their horns at me and made gestures :) and the meditative parts are the landscapes and animals. You even hear sounds that could be whale sounds and there's a feeling of being under water at times.

I don't think the 'normal' viewer picks up all this but I hope it makes sense and comes together in the big picture.

  • Liked your tour...
Music may have been chosen a bit differently (warmer), grading was nice...
    Thanks for sharing. Nice shoot!

Ahhhh.... you are making the EX1 "sing". I'd like to visit this place (for about a month) Very nice !
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 1 year ago
    :)

I'll see if I can make it three weeks next summer (2011)... Let me know if you want to come :D

I want to visit the other 8 islands as well...
  • rick fiduccia plus 1 year ago
The visuals you captured are extraordinary! I’d like to throw my cell phone in the ocean and just “hang out” there for a month – and not tell anyone where I went :-)
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 1 year ago
We can leave the 'recorders' and all other communications at home, if need be :)

This place and especially the remaining 8 islands are as far from civilization as you will come unless you are
    into the hardcore stuff... :D

fantastic!! how resolution have you shooting??
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 1 year ago
Everything was shot in full HD except for the slow motion which was 1280x720. This clip was rendered as 1280x536.

Stunning work as usual. You have such a great eye. The framing of each shot was excellent and the grading certainly set the mood. When it got to the end I thought surely 9 minutes haven't passed. That's always a great sign! :) Great job.

I'll be coming back to see Terceira and the other islands as well at some point :)

Next time will probably be in October, so that I can visit the Jazzfestival. Not this year, though.

I agree about the music, great choice! But off course that is only one aspect, the video is fantastic!

  • Kostas Petsas 1 year ago
Very nice presentation. The choice of grading and aspect ratio just gives quite a different feel from a vacation video.
