So, Amanda wrote this post tinyurl.com/3kmw7o, and I was supposed to pick some stills from footage to post along with it for her. And I started picking out 3 frames at a time from random clips, cause I was gonna pull the stills from Quicktime, not Final Cut, I didn't feel like stretching out the frames in Photoshop (cause it squishes the pixels in FCP) :P

Then I got carried away and picked way too many clips... then I got lazy and just slapped a song on it and hit export. It's awkwardly cut... but I guess it works :P

so pumped for project pedal to wrap up and be completed. I CAN'T wait to see it. Stumbled upon Project Pedal through a vimeo staff pick and have been following you guys ever since. Editing is going to be exciting.

Hey Evan :) Thanks! I hope we don't let you down - and I hope we can get the film out before everyone loses interest :P

I'm super excited about editing the film - scared, but excited.

    I LOVE this. Seriously.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thanks Stephen :) I love that you *love* it - watching it really takes me back... especially the first shot... the tall grass blowing in the wind, the rolling hills that go on forever... the old abandoned farm houses... I miss it.

the 2.35 works perfectly mike. good call. Love this.

and is that "you're so cool" from true romance?!

    bonus points if so.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Hey Ayz :) I'm super, super happy playing with footage in 2.35 - couldn't imagine cutting the film any other way.

Any, yes it is - it was a toss up of this song, or the original version by Carl Orff from 'Badlands' - which is one of my all time favorite films. And a huge inspiration for this documentary. The music, the narration, the beautiful landscapes... ahh, I need to go watch that film right now :P
  • Ayz Waraich 2 years ago
My brother actually just bought badlands... it's the only malick film i haven't seen. I'll have to grab it off him...

but i love that piece of music... works perfectly.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Let me know if you watch it :) I *love, love, love* that film. Love the narration... love the shots... love the mood... all of it. I think it's beautiful. And ;) it's all told from the point of looking back... which is something I'm probably ripping off heavily :P
  • Ayz Waraich 2 years ago
I saw badlands. It's really great... I love the contemplative nature of it. All of Malick's work has that...

I can see the influence on your work, but you've definitely made it your own...

You should check out the criterion edition of Days of heaven, if you haven't already. A great movie, with an awesome new transfer.

this music reminds me of one of my all time favorite movies. True Romance!

    great clip.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
True Romance is a great film :) have you ever seen 'Badlands'? A lot of things are similar in those two films, even the main song ;)

    Thanks!

  • Justin Adams 2 years ago
I was going to ask what movie the music was from. So it's in both movies?

    Great as usual Mike.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Yea - Hans Zimmer re-did it for 'True Romace', but it's the theme song from 'Badlands' :) Thanks.

  • You must let us europeans know when the film will be out, because we want to fly over to watch it first hand! :)
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Don't worry, Phil :) half the crew was from Belgium - we'll do our best to have it played in Europe for them and awesome people like yourself :) Thanks!

Is that dude in your video from Chilcoot, CA? Because if he is I think I know him...
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Yea, Larry is from around that area outside of Reno. This is his Vimeo profile vimeo.com/user465082, is this the guy you're thinking of? :)
  • Dave Christenson plus 2 years ago
Yeah...I'm friends with his buddy Casey but we all skateboarded together quite a bit when we were younger...I'm from Reno too...haha...small world!
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
That's awesome :) yea, Larry is the main person in our film. If you watch this episode vimeo.com/692973, it's all about Larry and his best friend, Jason Hale. You might know him too.

The shallow focus grass swaying in the wind is very eloquent shot. You've probably answered this question a hundred times, I just haven't seen that post yet. But could you explain what equipment you used to shoot this beautiful film on?
I'd really be interested in buying this when it comes out on DVD.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thanks Zach :) I don't think I've answered quite a 100 times yet, maybe just a dozen ;) for the shots with the 35 lenses we had a SGpro kit. I think the shot with the grass was used with Amanda's 300 lens on the Fx1. One of the crew members from Pedal, Olivier, wrote a great post about the kit and how they work here cinematography.com/forum2004/index.php?showtopic=26379, I think you'd enjoy it :)

Thanks - I am looking forward to the day when we burn off the first of the first of the dvds. That's going to feel crazy.

"Thanks - I am looking forward to the day when we burn off the first of the first of the dvds. That's going to feel crazy."

you HAVE to do a vlog for those moments... Man, I am getting emotional just thinking about projects I have finished that were no where near this level of labor of love-ness. new stages for the project = more excitment.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
We will do that for sure - don't let me forget ;) It will be sad though, cause we won't be able to put *that* vlog on the dvd :P cause they'll already be made. Oh well, I guess something will always just have to live online. Thanks Evan :)

LOVE the music, and now I can't get this song out of my head... (not that I want to). Maybe you could post a link to the specific artist and song on iTunes so we can get it?

On a different note, have you read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thanks Wayne :) Yea, I have so many memories during filming of us driving along a long stretch of road with that song blasting on off the ipod... this specific version of just called "you're so cool" (or it's also sometimes called "the beach song", I think) by Hans Zimmer off the 'True Romance' soundtrack. But if you want the orginal, that's called 'Musica Poetica' by Carl Orff. I love both songs.

No, I've never read that book though :P

Thanks for your comment. Alot of great shots here. especially the first one.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey Alex :) Thanks. I do love that first shot, it goes on for a long, long time - I think it's most nostalgic for me, but I could watch long takes of Larry riding for hours at a time... it takes me back. I miss the road.
