This month the IWC, supported by Iceland, are pushing allow more commercial whaling. Make them stop - don't be fooled by the video. Lovely place, but Icelanders are poor international citizens - and I haven't even mention the billions Icelandic banks owe other European countries. For more on the whaling issue, check the Huffington Post.
Fewer than 50K fin whales exist in the North Atlantic. Endangered - I think so.
To really understand the issue, just google "Iceland Whale hunting" and research it yourself.
Essentially, these people are just holding desperately onto a stupid tradition that should have been buried years ago along with tiger hunting, wife beating, witch burning, etc etc.
Icelanders haven't hunted Fin whales since 1989. After 1989 we stopped hunting whales for 14 years.
And in 2003 we began the hunting again, but NOT hunting Fin whales. The only whale we hunt today is the Minke whale.
And as for Hlynur's suggestion? total garbage i'm afraid. Iceland resumed commercial whaling in 2006 hunting Minke and Fin whales. In 2009 Iceland killed 129 endangered Fin whales, selling the meat to Japan, an appalling practice that can have no possible cultural benefit. Don't believe the lies.
Although the issues are poles apart - it sounds a bit like South Africa in the 80's with apartheid. I guess looking back, many South Africans who favoured the old way would think all that international pressure to change their antiquated belief system was worthwhile. I wonder how much money, and prestige the 2010 World Cup football bought to the country.
Until Iceland gives up their ignorant, primitive tradition of slaughtering whales they should be boycotted - Don't travel to Iceland and pay for these people to ILLEGALLY hunt an endangered species. Boycott Iceland!
In a country where the main industry of fishing had been decimated the new industry of tourism had infact created new jobs and brought in an unexpected wave of new wealth- increasing year on year. This was helped in no small part by the fantastic revelation that people wanted to see whales- as opposed to eating them.
But, as with all "post" whaling nations- there was always a small group arguing for it's reintroduction- they may have been small in number but they were persistant and voluble. They also had their allies in government and eventually of course they won their day and licences were granted.
But now is a new era- a new government who have already said they will not be looking to renew the licences. We shall see.
So please let's not go overboard and criticise the nation and it's fantastic people for the actions of a few- your rally for a boycott is misguided- everyone should visit Iceland and take part in those industries not connected with the hunting of whales as a boycott will leave a nation, already reeling from the financial meltdown with few other industries to turn to- one of them being whale hunting itself.
Instead we should be boycotting those restaurants who choose to sell whale meat- if they lose that valuable revenue that instead goes to their smarter competitors then they will think again about putting this fine animal on their menu boards.
I will be visiting Iceland again this year- enjoying the cultural benefits as usual- maybe go whale watching again- now that's how to show a nation where they should be heading.
Conservation is one of these things.
If the government of Iceland is to sponsor a video like this to encourage people to Iceland, they cant expect this issue to be ignored and be chipped away at for years by consumer pressure from those who have already spent their limited cash on visiting Iceland!
If we took that approach, Kristjan Loftsson (a millionaire whaler that the government sent to represent Iceland at the IWC meeting) will be opening a whale burger restaurant for the tourists. I can see it now - Traditional Icelandic Food. And, I'm sure some tourists would buy into it. All part of the experience huh?
I'm sorry, but Iceland really needs to work out its priorities - Whale Watching, or Whale Hunting. The government sent a guy to negotiate Icelands IWC stance on whaling (who clearly makes millions from commercial whaling) while in the same month they promoted Iceland as a nice eco friendly earth loving tourist destination???!! They don't go together. Ridiculous that anyone could consider that they would.
I understand and sympathise with the restaurant owners who have suffered from financial meltdown - as a business owner myself the global financial crisis has been tough - but the people of Iceland need to decide what they want.
I'm sure if whaling is supported by the minority they wont have much trouble banning it. Then they can get into whale watching. I'd travel to Iceland to see that.
Meantime, I can't wait to try whaleburgers!
I love that you created a throwaway account on Vimeo just to slap your political message up. I hope the owner of the account can delete your pointless messages.
This is an awesome video, showing awesome people doing cool stuff. Get a life Gee Dee and fight your political battles in the right forums. This isn't it.
About the fin whale comments then it's right that we hunt them BUT we export them and do not sell them in Iceland, only minke whales are hunted. Fin whales are not endangered on the northern hemisphere but only by the Antarctica. Quite the contrary is happening in the northern seas where the number of fin whales is increasing and is even more now than before they were hunted.
This whale discussion does not belong here and I'm sure that the clean energy that Iceland produces does compensate for hunting a few whales every year. You can dig up dirt on every country if you want to but this is not the place.
That is a lie. None whale hunting is sustainable. Believe in what nature shows you, not your goverment!
What you said is the the that Japan said before and the Norway is saying indeed.
Nice add.. nice place... same about some of its people forcing many to not want to visit!
I, honestly, must now move to Iceland. Thank you, advertisement!
