Raw footage version of vimeo.com/1216509
This is the raw footage version of vimeo.com/1216509. This is how the video looks straight from the camcorder (50i PAL - neutral color settings).
I would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming attention that you gave the Magic Bullet Looks version: vimeo.com/1216509.
With this, I'm hoping to show you just how big a difference MBL / sharpening did to the footage. You can also get a better feel of my current Letus35 Mini setup (how sharp it is / lack of vignetting and so on)...
Your thoughts are welcome :)

(Thanks for the comparison, it's always interesting to see)
However, I'll give it a try :)
Things to consider:
HV20/30 has slightly higher image quality but you will have to change tapes every 20 minutes (same optics as the HG10 that has a harddisk).
HV20/30 records in mpeg2 (HG10 in mpeg4 known as AVCHD - more compression - longer recording time).
HV20/30 footage is easier to edit / render because of the lower compression (25mbps compared to the HG10's 16mbps) because the PC has to decompress less.
You should also know that you will probably need to spend money on better editing software than the one that comes with the HV20/30 / HG10. Sony Vegas Platinum 8 is a good choice (about USD 115). The supplied software that comes with the camcorders is extremely basic but usable.
Of course, there is also the Canon HF100/10 - similar to HG10 but with flash memory.
If you just expected a simple yes or no to your question :) the answer is YES. I'm a big fan of the HG10.
Hope that helps...
I'm on a PC and to be honest, I don't know that much about macs. However, I found this page that explains your options...

Congratuations.
I'm going to have to be content with not having those tools to play with, since in order to use MBL, I would have to spend about $4000 to $5000 ($1200 for FCP, roughly $3000 for a mac worth running it on, then $400 for MBL). It kind of irks me that MBL runs with the $115
Vegas, but not the $300 FCE. I'd be less bothered if it also didn't work with FCP and was for PC only, but this way I just feel like I'm stuck eating at the children's table. Me and my Mickey Mouse FCE 4.
That's a pitfall everyone should try to avoid, though, worrying too much about the tools they DON'T have. In the end it's about getting something out of what you DO have. I'm sure you must have a list of gear you'd love to have that's out of your reach, too. It's the same for everyone, there's always a budget, and levels above it
beyond reach.
What I really need to do is spend more time discussing the videos posted and less whining about gear I can't afford or hitting up the creator for advice. I'll be working on that in the future.
Anyway, both versions show the most important tool you're using, the eye for choosing and setting up interesting, well composed shots. In that respect, you're working with the equivilant of pro gear.
You're right. It shouldn't be about the gear, only. I love my gear but still love what other people do with their 'low budget' gear.
The grass will probably always be greener on the other side :) and yes, I'd love to have a Letus Ultimate, now that I know what limitations my Mini has compared to the Ultimate.
Wishing and dreaming about things is OK I guess as long as it doesn't ruin your daily life with what you have already :)
Learning about composition and storytelling is more important than gear and I'll be honest and admit that I still have a whole lot to learn. However, that's the whole idea - having the desire to learn and move on...
Best wishes for your's and my progress... :)
This video may not be the best example of storytelling (but I bet one could be gleaned from it), but you show a very good eye for the composition in every one of these shots. Were they all just random locations found on the spot while shooting? If so then you're quick to distill them into an interesting viewpoint. That's a natural eye for it, which is the part that can't really be learned.
It may be a while before I show up with some actual edited pieces (maybe a test here and there), I still need to test out what my results will be with iMovie/FCE4 before I try to do something more
full-fledged. But I don't want to spend too much time just commenting without letting people see something I've done.
43mm UV filters? The 43mm thread is on your camcorder, I believe (not knowing what cam you have). If you want UV filters, they should go on the lenses that you attach to the Letus.
This video was shot on my street and very much just 'on the spot'. I've been using a DSLR (Canon EOS 30D) for two years, so I think I'm OK at composition by now. Video is a whole different ball game, though.
I've ordered from BHphotovideo.com a few times. They seem very good and they talk about their 'Superstore' in NY. Why not give them a try, since you are right there next to them :)
We all started out with 'test footage'. Hell, this is test footage if you ask me :) I'll be doing a few short subjects in my summer holidays - 3 weeks from next Wednesday.
As for now, I just picked up the HG10 a month ago (along with the DW-100 burner, great if you have a PS3 or Blu-ray). After being a bit let down by the fluttery 24p and occasional artifacting, I added an HV30, so now I'm a two-fisted shooter, since each has their strengths and weaknesses.
Add a Letus on top of that and you can see why I'm starting to watch the budget. I've got a decent little bit of money in the bank (small inheritance), but I'm not always sure if it's safe around me. I'm easily tempted, so I get even more nervous when there's a lot of things I'd like and COULD cover the cost of, but at the expense of my security. And I've been through credit debts, so I don't want to repeat that. I'd love a Canon 14mm lens, but WOW... :(
The 43mm filter would be for shooting normally, I don't expect to go Letus-exclusive right away. I have 46 from my Sony 701 Hi8, but I'd rather not use a step ring just for a UV filter. I'm also not in NYC, but 50 miles up in the State. It's out here where the shops are vanishing. I just ordered the Canon mic online. I'm not a big fan of mail order, preferring to just go pick things up, but I'm getting acclimated to it. It's hard to avoid these days.
Great success for 3 weeks from next Wednesday. I'll be looking forward to seeing what you post from it!
