Went out and shot a little dirt jumping with Paul Basagoitia at his property, day and a half of shooting gave some great shots. Definitely plan on heading out again sometime soon.

Big thanks to Errol Kerr for operating the camera mount on the heli and Paul for trusting me to not cut his head off!

word photoship is the way to go. I'm thinking about getting one for a custom mikrokopter I'm building. Are you piloting the heli? the shots look way smooth

I use a Sigma 10-20, normally try to shoot at 20 because 10 is just too wide.

hey Trent, have you tried the 5D? I am thinking of getting that or the 7D to do both stills and video.

Love this work... I expect you will see this used a lot by others in up and coming movies.

PB has one hell of a back yard!
  • Trent Palmer plus 1 year ago
I have shot a lot on the 5D but havent put one on the heli yet, I am sure it will do fine but I really like having 60p on the 7D.

Haha, Brain Farm is my inspiration! They have the absolute sickest camera mount and everything imagine-able to mount it on.

I am flattered that they came to mind when you saw this though!

i must agree thats the first thing i thought of after i watched this. its a semi affordable way to do it though!
amazing work trent cant wait to see more.

Hi Trent, You need to seriously consider positioning yourself as the expert as this space explodes with the next generation of HEX Copters now arriving -- Sort of be like an updated Philip Bloom maybe... He had over 10,000,000 hit his site.. So consider providing the real goods on HOW To asap as he did... Just remember the guys selling the gold pans made much more than the guys panning for gold...hahah Mike

Absolutely amazing video and editing! :-)

Did you use a video downlink (is that at all possible with a 7D?) or did you "just point and shoot"?

    Thanks a million

    Peter
  • Trent Palmer plus 1 year ago
    Thanks man!

We used a downlink, its nearly impossible to aim the camera without a live feed.
  • Peter Sindrup 1 year ago
    Thanks

Could you provide some details regarding the downlink? Is the video feed from the DX7? And if yes, how?

    Much appreciated.

    Peter
  • Greg Borkman plus 1 year ago
I'd also like to know about the downlink, going wireless has always been an issue for me.

F-in' awesome. The smoothest RC heli video I've ever seen. The combination of the Photoship One, electric motor, wide lens, fast heli speeds, 60fps, light winds, and a little 'Smoothcam' = PERFECT. Am I right?

That RC Helicopter set up you got going on is amazing. Production value instantly bumped WAY up.

How the hell did you keep the subject in focus! I have enough trouble doing that when I'm holding the bloody camera in my hands, let alone when the camera's mounted from a helicopter in the middle of the air!

Hey Trent, I just moved from Reno, what a shame. Great film by the way, the smoothest RC shots I've seen by far, great job man. I had two questions, which downlink worked for you and which specific photoship mount did you use, the front mount system or did you mount it under the heli with the VR360 or was it a custom mount. Thanks man, great work keep it up, I'll definitely keep watching your profile to see what you do next.
  • Vladi Turkov plus 1 year ago
Never mind on the mount I just found the setup on runryder, looks good man.

    Hi,

Realy nice shots you did there. Could you tell a little about the process how you coordinated with the camera operator? i guess you cannot look at the live feed of the camera while flying, without crashing the helicopter? so did you plan out the heli movements or did the cameraoperator just adapt the camera looking direction to your heli movements?

May I ask if you had to use any ND filter in order to manage to keep that nice shallow depth of field in a bright sunny day? Which one did you use? THANKS !!
  • Trent Palmer plus 1 year ago
Yeah, I used a ND8 when I was shooting from the ground, not sure what brand it is.

This video is absolutely stunning! I wouldn't change a thing, except that closing shot. As the music fade and the camera pans away, it should end. The truck splash shot is completely out of place. That shot should be right after the shot of the truck driving through the gate IMO.
