Nice. Was this shot with the HV20? did you use a 35mm adapter how did you convert to BW?
  • Matt Taylor 1 year ago
Yes, it was shot with the HV20 with a 35mm adapter attached. I purchased the adapter from TwoNeil:
    vimeo.com/user288537

To make the video black and white I applied a Hue/Saturation effect in After Effects and just turned the saturation all the way down. I don't know if that's the best way to do it, but it seemed to work well enough. I also raised the contrast a bit!

Wow, that was freaky scary! Reminded me of a bit of John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness...
  • Matt Taylor 1 year ago
Thanks! I saw that movie in the theatre when I was young, I love the grainy, uneven shots of the figure in the doorway that served as thier warning that the Prince was coming.

very nice - how did you achieve the effect? was it 2 shots composited?
  • Matt Taylor 1 year ago
    Thanks!

Yes, I put one piece of footage on a layer above the other and then masked a portion of the top layer to reveal the layer beneath. Its an animated mask that follows the edge of my hand and face in the foreground.

At one point you can clearly see the hand on the toothbrush in the mirror instantly change position. I wanted it to be more seamless then that, but after fiddling with it forever I just gave up.

    Great stuff!

And I thought "Silent Hill", too - a game which works mostly (I think) because of its sound...

Hoho, that's a great one. How did you get the grainy effect for the mirror footage?

4the staff, why do I get this vid on the 9th day?
  • Matt Taylor 1 year ago
    Thanks!

That was actually just how the footage looked due to the 35mm adapter. Perhaps removing the color and turning up the contrast made it stand out more, but that was not something I did purposely, even though I did like the end result.

Ok, that was the best I've heard so far! That was so scary, probably because of the groaning. I don't like groaning/fly sounds. Uhhah.
  • Matt Taylor 1 year ago
    Thank you!

I don't know if you can tell, but that groaning was the sound of a baby crying slowed way down. I tried all kinds of sounds. At one point I had a lion growling, glass breaking, chanting, birds screeching, car crashing sounds, and other stuff!

Great work. Can you tell me what did you use for the strobing effect? Was that done in After effects as well? If so what plug in? it would useful for an old time comedy I am doing. thanks
  • Matt Taylor 1 month ago
Thanks Morty! To create the strobing effect in After Effects I used a plugin called Trapecode Sound Keys to make the opacity of a solid white layer react to some audio of record player noise that I had. You'll notice at the start that the strobing is in time with the skip of the record.
You could do the same thing but you should find some audio of an old projector, that way the strobing would match up to the projector sound.
