All the Mentawai interviews were translated on location with Ricky, Gejeng and Will. However later to sync up the words to the interviews, I had to make a few Skype calls to Ricky and play him the audio. Because of that, some of the words might not be perfectly arranged in the time line, but the content is accurate.

What was the video shot with? Canon 5D?
    Looks beautiful.
  • Cale Glendening plus 1 year ago
No it was actually done all with my hvx200. My letus extreme broke the FIRST day on the island. I shot it all stock lens, hand held.
  • Love Story Media plus 1 year ago
Hand held? Those super smooth low angle moving shots were hand held? Nice work.
  • Cale Glendening plus 1 year ago
Yes they were. It was hard enough sneaking my camera to the island. We had to go bare minimal. Getting smooth shots in that forest was the hardest filming I have ever done.

Once you accept government you loose liberty. I am envious of their freedom, feel sorry for their offsprings and how I wish to tell them to go back and not to give up their culture. By the way good work.

  •
  • The subject and the format is excellent- are the dvd's on sale? Awesome job- can you do behind the scenes video especially with regars to the techical stuff? really want to learn how to achieve such amazingly flawless footage.
  • Cale Glendening plus 1 year ago
His photo dvd's are on sale yes, you can find them on his site.

As for the video, it was an hvx200 i shot pretty neutral the entire time. I used a tripod maybe 1% of the trip. No tricks or special techniques, just hard work.
  • iamkalaniprince plus 1 year ago
"just hard work".. aint that the truth!.. well done guys. I've been following Joey's work since the dvxuser.com days : ) Very nice stuff.

Nice video, Joey! I just got off a 2-night editing spree putting together some shots from a trip to the Indian Himalaya three years ago. THere's nothing like sifting through hours of footage to get you about ready to eBay your "regular" life and buy a ticket ;-)

That's an opportunity of a lifetime. The lighting looked cumbersome, but great. Why did you choose such a large light to carry around?
  • Joey L pro 1 year ago
The indirect light of the large octabank gives a dramatic yet soft quality of tone. It's exact look cannot be achieved in any other light source

    Amazing job guys!
I think you guys could have achieved the same result without bringing that much equipment! You can put the whole trip at risk with all that stuff. Creating a whole studio, also can jeopardize the authenticity of people and environment and make subjects feel uncomfortable. It must have been very inconvenient, energy, time, and money wise, as you needed to hire people to carry it.

The content is what makes this very special. The photos which contrast their old way of life and the new generation are great. It seemed that you guys really connected with them and they really opened up to you guys.
Amazing video and project, and thank you for sharing your experience.
  • Joey L pro 1 year ago
The equipment achieves a stylistic element, which is used to visually convey the moral element. Without attention to both, there is little "authenticity" in what I attempted to capture

    Thanks for the insightful comment

Which cam did you use in this video
And what lens you use ?

    Best regards from KSA ...
  • Cale Glendening plus 1 year ago
    Thanks Abdul.
I posted in a comment above.

I used the HVX200 with the stock lens. I took my letus extreme there with canon lenses but it broke, so the entire video is shot stock hvx200.

    Edited in FCP.
