Cool! It's a GoPro and a mobile phone with GPS and tracking software that sent you the position?

Cool. How did you retreive the GoPRO? Please post some more info on the project and gear used! =)

Hey guys! Thanks for the comments. Yup, we used two GoPro cameras for this. The footage here only shows the downward facing camera. We also have footage from one that was pointed somewhat upwards so as to capture both the horizon and the balloon in one shot.

For retrieval, we used a spot tracker (findmespot.com). We did run into an interference problem with the spot tracker that may have come from either the cameras or another gps we had on board.

We're going to put together a website with some details at some point. In the meantime, feel free to email me any questions.

Awesome idea and use of such an awesome little camera.

  • Emil Janesten 1 year ago
Very cool! But next time Position the camera so that it is filming to the side instead of toward the ground. It'll be awesome when it gets up high and you see earths horizon.
  • Francois Brahic 1 year ago
We actually have two more cameras, one pointing out the side and one pointing up, but we haven't had a chance to upload any video from them yet.
  • Emil Janesten 1 year ago
Great, will be eagerly waiting for those uploads! :-)

  • Francois Brahic 1 year ago

    Odd thing seen at 3:48
    i.imgur.com/bcHV6.png

can anyone figure out what that is?
  • Francois Brahic 1 year ago
That's part of the balloon falling just after it popped. That's why the capsule starts swinging right about then and you can see the horizon.
  • s park 1 year ago
very cool. for a moment i thought it was some ufo.
  •
  • Anthony Spencer plus 1 year ago
So how far from the launch site was the landing site?
  • Francois Brahic 1 year ago
    About 80 miles.
  •
  • Kevin Robbins 1 year ago
awesome. i would also i like to know the distance from launch to landing.
  •
  • MYVIMEO 1 year ago
Awsome guys! But I wouldn't want to have it landing on my head. That thing can kill someone! But I love it and would like to see the other cams. Very cool!
  • Francois Brahic 1 year ago
Everything's actually packed in styrofoam, and there's a parachute slowing the capsule down. We actually did some drop testing before hand to make sure it was reasonably safe.

    Guys, that's awesome.
I'm really looking forward for a website to see all the footage.
How did you managed the camera's battery life (which should be approx 3,5 hours)?
  • Francois Brahic 1 year ago
Thanks! We used an external battery pack to recharge the cameras over USB during the flight. That gave use about 4-4.5hrs of battery life.

Very impressive. Was there any FAA approval/NOTAM necessary for this flight?
  • Francois Brahic 1 year ago
    Hey Steve,

We notified the FAA and worked with them a bit to select a good launch site. There is an FAR on this if you're curious, and technically if your payload is under 4lbs (which ours is), you have no rules to follow.

  • joe salas 1 year ago
that was sooooo awesome! how'd you track it and recover it?

what size ballon did you use, also how much helium did you fill it with assuming it was helium
  •
  • mark castro plus 1 year ago
why is the audio not in sync with the falling part in some areas. mainly towards the end.. And the camera did not pick up sound where camera hits the ground at the end? So fascinated by this video.
  •
  • mark castro plus 1 year ago
@ Steve Ascher Do you really think FAA would agree to this? Of course not. To bad no visual sights of any satellites in space.. lol.. or maybe it was edited out since it appears edit cuts were done in post. I suspect to cut down the length of the video (speed things up a bit)

would love to see some pictures from one your team mates who had a photo camera in hand during take off.

where you inspired by patrick who attempted the first GoPro flight at least here at Vimeo? vimeo.com/7460863
I dont know what kind of experiment this was for you and your team, but i find it interesting how noticeable the color of your video is from Patricks. My guess is camera angle, and time of day? The color on Patricks video is superb. All natural and of course during the golden hour! I would like to see your footage with a little color correction to give it a bit more umF....not that your video needs it but man it would just put this video at the top. at least from a eye candy perspective.
