When spring had arrived in Vienna, I thought about showing the beauty of nature, landscapes, ...

But then I realized that on a macro scale, it's incredible what is going on which you normally never realize!

I started initially to just reverse mount my 50mm f1.4 lens (taping it to the adapter on my Lumix GH1), but then for quality reasons I bought a used 50mm f3.5 FD macro lens with a 25mm extender.

Almost everything was filmed in my garden, apart from the first sequence which was on a small hill very close to my house - I realized that the flowers there became extremely rare and are under severe protection! Just in the middle of Vienna ...

Fascinating - hope you enjoy my take on that!

  • Very nice! I like macro-stuff and some of the shots could be straight out of a "Universum" documentary. Keep up the good work.

That's something !!! Beautiful shots ... absolutely stunning.

I actually had the same idea and want to shoot something similar here in summer ... hopefully, if I might have the time ;-)) The macro lens looks absolutely great. I should get one too. How far or close do you need to get for these shots ?
  • Gunther Machu plus 1 year ago
Dear James, thank you very much for your comments. With the 50mm macro lens and the 25mm extender you have to get pretty close, about 5 - 10cm from the front lens. That makes it very difficult, as most animals feel very uncomfortable at such a distance ... Not to mention the earthquakes you are producing at the slightest camera movement ...

Notify me if you do something similar, I am very interested!

    best regards, Gunther

Amazing micro world. The shots of the bees are really great.
I think I have to take out my Kiron Lester Dine for some shots too :)
  • Gunther Machu plus 1 year ago
Thanks! What is a Kiron Lester Dine?
  • Kostas Petsas 1 year ago
It is an old macro lens made by Kiron, built like a tank, 105 mm f 2.8 which goes to 1:1. There is a Lester A. Dine version of this lens which is an identical optical formula dental lens and is labeled with a dental focusing guide. Mine is the FD mount version (not the dental one).

Hi Gunther, really impressive work! Just wondering about the quality and color of your work... seems very uncompressed and without any artifacts. Any special setting? And what software did you use for grading? Thanks for sharing!
  • Gunther Machu plus 1 year ago
I use Edius Neo 2 for editing, and I export everything at H264 with av. bitrate = 12Mbits/s, max = 15Mbits/s. Vimeo seems to like H264 the most, as I almost can't tell any difference to the original version after vimeo recompression.

Gunther I also wanted to ask you what type of camera did you use, was it all natural lighting, and the score, WOW! Were can I find that gentelmans work? Again brillant.
  • Gunther Machu plus 1 year ago
I use the Lumix GH1. The score is from Thomas Newman, he is doing mainly music for motion pictures. This one is from "Revolutionary road"

The score was very important to create that peaceful mood. It worked very well. Your exposures & grading were fantastic. Your actors played their parts perfectly. All on the "cheap" in your back yard no less! As a general comment: I think all of the "big shot" Hollywood producers/film makers could take a few lessons from the creators on this site. It's what film making is truly all about; PASSION!
