Amazing video! The cinematographer made it happen not just a hacked gh1. Speaking of which, the folks at aster.nu/gh1.php achieved MUCH higher bitrates in ADVHD namely effective 61Mbit averaged output! Thats even higher than the mjpeg. They say its better quality too, though obviously you need a heck of a fast computer to edit is all or premiere cs5 which can edit realtime 1920x1080 AVCHD using your GPU to render effects in realtime. Anyone used Premiere cs5 yet? Boy i love how you filmed all this in rain! in the end its all about the workflow wouldnt u say?

No straight out of the GH1B!

  • Very nice, Andrew. Thanks for doing this. To help evaluate the firmware hack I'd like to see a bit more motion in at least a few scenes, but this looks very nice as it is. And with tester13's continuing work on the firmware hack, the best is yet to come. :-)
  • Andrew Reid plus 1 year ago
Thanks a lot Peter. Can't wait to see what Tester13 comes up with next! His software has enabled us to test and test for the magic recipe. It helps him, it helps us. Perfect situation all round really. Hope he can handle the publicity though as geniuses tend to be a bit cranky with that kind of thing.
  • Sam 1 year ago
Indeed... cant wait to see whats in the next patch. Meanwhile we can only keep optimizing the compression codes. In an attempt to find out the logic behind the Quality and Table numbers (which together form an essential input of the hacktool), here is a comparison chart between 5 famous MJPEG settings (amongst Andrew Reid, PappasArts and Martin Kochs) aster.nu/gh1.php

PhilipBloom.co.uk hacked GH1 firmware turns the camera into Optimus Prime! BLIMEY!!

We are approaching the best camera of the moment with these incredible advances of the firmware!

    GH2.... We forget her.
  • BumKi Cho plus 1 year ago
I am sure you didn't mean Philip hacked GH1, but just to clarify PhilipBloom.co.uk did not hack GH1 firmware. Philip Bloom and Andrew Reid of EOS HD both state it is tester13(@dvxuser)'s work that made it all possible for us to enjoy GH1 even more. I just want to make sure we give the credit where credit is due.

Is there any side effect on camera? Higher temperature on processor? Hot? Or at long time, less lifetime of GH1?
  • Andrew Reid plus 1 year ago
No problems with heat so far. Camera doesn't even feel warm to the touch. As for lifetime, it will probably take us a lifetime to find that out! I doubt it will have any affect. Well within limits of heat having affect on camera life by the looks of it.

  • Ian Meredith 1 year ago
So do people think it will even be worth getting the GH2, surely it won't come out with 50Mbit, and all the other advancements from hacking the firmware. I guess the question is, will tester 13 be able to work his magic on the GH2 too...
  •
  • Simone Salvatori 1 year ago
Great job! It does look good. Is the stuttering motion between 1:23 and 1:38 (approx.) regular 24p stuttering or something else? Maybe it's just my computer. Is there any other sequence with fast movements?
  • Andrew Reid plus 1 year ago
That's probably due to me conforming the 30p MJPEG to 24p. Subtle, but I see it!

An old Contax Yashica mount Zeiss 85MM F1.4 and an even older Canon FD 35MM F2 SSC. They look great on the GH1 and give you interesting focal lengths as well as a nice character and shallow depth of field.

I don't currently earn anything from web traffic. But yes, kudos to Tester13 and his software. He's a genius.
  • Very odd comment Alan. I am making no money from that blog, just simply reporting the news in which case are you suggesting any time a website reports news about something then the person whom the article is about should be paid? That is odd!

there is a request for people to make a donation to tester13 on my site Alan if you read my blog.

    Thanks!

    P
  • Andrew Reid plus 1 year ago
I think Alan, tester13 has gained plenty through his hard work, and if anything - maybe tester13 should donate to us from publicising his work and getting people to donate? At the moment the balance is about right I think. Nobody is ripping anybody else off. Use the firmware, enjoy it and be creative with it and don't worry about the moral implications of news articles… there aren't any!

Ok, does this mean a hacked GF1 firmware is far behind?? Please say yes! :)
  • Andrew Reid plus 1 year ago
Already here! I think people still need to test out the right settings for it though, and it won't be anywhere near the quality that the GH1 is capable of. GH1 is as purpose built for video as a stills camera gets right now. Great sensor and processors.

The temple is amazing at night. I'll shoot more next week plus there is the Isco Centavision 3x anamorphic stuff coming, so plenty to look forward to from this camera! Tester13 has now also fixed 24p native AVCHD 32Mbit playback on the camera. So that is officially good riddance to 17Mbps 24p in 60i wrapper and pulldown on the original camera. Great stuff.

Things going through my head at the moment:

    1. Panasonic is suddenly at a loss of words since their secret plan (I'm guessing) was to unlock the GH1 (a la Tester13) and sell that as the GH2. So now they have to actually design and build a real new camera.

    2. Now, GH1's will start selling at a premium and all the 2ndhand ones will jump up in price....

    3. Tons of GH1 rigs/lens/etc will be out there now and everyone will sell off their 550D's to be 'cool' again.

    4. Canon will hold an emergency meeting of their engineers to discuss what to do with this sudden upset and loss of 'glory'... "Hey, this revolution is about us and now we're suddenly out of the spotlight!!"

    5. Canon will release the firmware we've all been waiting for since they need to regain the upper ground.

    6. Nikon will still do what they do best.... nothing.

    7. We shooters get more choices and better results! What grand times we live in!

Does this take care of any aliasing as well? Or did the GH1 never have that issue?
  • Andrew Reid plus 1 year ago
Never an issue like it is on the Canon's. GH1's main vice was the codec.

Congratulations for the video and the music. I watched it yesterday two times and another one today.
I was waiting for the GH2, but now I am thinking in the GH1. ¡Cheaper and probably better! I think Panasonic will not give us as much as tester13.
  •
  • Awesome footage as usual and technically improved !
Panasonic should read this thread and bring us a decent Official GH1 Firmware Update !
The only thing that may be an issue for me is that MJpeg is not a good codec for Colorists or Post people, I think I would rather work on ProRes HQ (10 bits latitude)

  • Doug Garland 1 year ago
Bloom has stated that the 5d still has a better image. I find this hard to believe. I keep comparing footage and I dont know how he can make such a statement. The GH1 has always had a great image but so few ppl know about it. I talked to a guy the other day who was bragging about his new 5d and how it was used on House. I showed him my GH1 and he said he had never heard of it. At the event, a short documentary of mine was being shown on a 20 ft screen and it looked amazing. He was blown away with the footage. The GH1 body is only $680 and people still believe the T2i is the best bargain. I looked at the T2i in the store and it felt very cheap in build quality and weight.
  • Andrew Reid plus 1 year ago
I totally agree Doug. The Canons are overrated but I'm looking forward to what they do next. The 5D is an old camera. For the price the GH1 is absolutely amazing. The 5D's only strength is that it's a full frame sensor and that it's better at ISO 1600. But apart from that - um - I'm struggling to find what all the fuss is about. Too much shallow depth of field, a soft image, muted and absolutely terrible handling especially without a Z-Finder. Lack of articulated screen is a back breaker for video on sticks. I sold my 5D and kept the GH1. Down to personal taste I guess.
  • DSLRcinema plus 1 year ago
Totally agree here with both of you. The over all image quality of the GH1, imho, was always better than the other dslrs...but now with the hack...the GH1(3) kicks some booty!

Let's hope not. I can understand Tester 13's concern expressed on dvxuser about his work being exploited though. He did a hell of a lot more than "flip a bit" as suggested on a recent "hd" blog. But this is the Internet, everyone's a marketeer and looking for their piece of the pie, even if they didn't bake it.
  • Andrew Reid plus 1 year ago
I don't fully understand Tester13's attitude, since the beginning he's been quite hostile to outside sites. He also admitted that he wants to make private distributions of the firmware and that his aim is to make a lot of money from it. His work is excellent, but without publicity and testers and donations - where would he be? This is why, I find his attitude on DVX a bit ungrateful and a bit pissy. But I try to forget that, and to concentrate on the positives. He really has opened the GH1 up like a book.

i miss your posts on dvx ha....but now i can get it all on your site =)

can you use panas v1.2 firmware with the latest ptools or does it have to be v1.32? would like to keep the incriments on v1.2 just in case i need to send it in and can revert to v1.32 then.
  • Andrew Reid plus 1 year ago
It has to be V1.32 as the starting point. Go beyond v1.40 in increment and you will probably have to wait for Tester13 to hack V1.40 if Panasonic bring out an official firmware at a later date. Then if he chooses to charge for it, it leaves us a bit at his mercy. If you are afraid of this scenario, it's probably best not to go ahead but the possible gains are much larger than the potential hinderance!
  • TheMuc 1 year ago
funnily enough the latest ptools now negates version checks so you can put in any versions earlier or later now...sweet sweet day indeed. the guys a friggin' mind reader! I'd give him a man hug if i could..ha

by the way have you tested pappas's 80mb mjpeg settings? are you able to playback on camera with your 50mb settings?

update: its not recommend to downgrade earlier that v1.32..thats still good enough for me =)

quick question: can i flash it with panasonics original firmware again (in case service is needed) after using the hacked one? ThX
  •
  • Andrew Reid plus 1 year ago
You cannot flash it with the original V1.32 firmware. However the version number shows as V1.3 in the menus until about 10 version increments later. So as long as you untick all the boxes and do an update and you're not way into the higher increments, then the service centre might not even notice. I expect the service centre can wipe the EPROM completely anyway. But not 100% confirmed.
