Amazingly well produced and beautiful shots... But best of all it's great to see someone execute a story well unlike so many of the others that lack a strong narrative.

The little Alison have by far the best performance.
The father should have demonstrated a little more surprise enthusiasm (whatever) when he sees Alison.

Direction, editing and sound mixture are very pleasant nice work.

But i think the best of all is the story it self.

    I voted on you

thanks for your vote ricardo! i appreciate it very much...

technically beautiful and powerful, but the sense of story that leaves you wanting more is the reason it seems to capture me much more than the others!

I thought the DP did a great job. It was my favorite part. More range from the father wouldn't hurt, but he does exhibit a kind nature.

thanks luan! given that i was my own dp, i appreciate that :)

Kudos to you then. Love the tilt down shot of the cemetary and the moving shots of him. The chess playground was also really cool.

Similar to 'LOST', this chapter took the previous chapters and put them in a whole new context with the flashback. I really liked that. The plot developments of the previous chapters were only so-so. But 'Miracle' makes me interested to find out more. More than any of the other finalists, I think your chapter asks the audience to invest in the whole story as opposed to only what happens next. Great job!
  • Ryan Booth plus 1 year ago
thanks kevin. definitely the goal...expand the existing story and (hopefully) enhance each of the chapters before it while providing new places to explore for the chapters to come...

Thanks Tim. Kind words... I recorded audio with an AT shotgun into a Zoom H4N or Fostex FR2-LE (depending on the day). Only used one lens: Canon 24-70 f2.8 L series. Great piece of glass. It was my first narrative piece, so I am raring to shoot another one :)
  •
  • Really nice story line, I have only seen Miracle and now I have to check out your previous work. Great work!

thanks! unfortunately, there isn't too much else to check out. this is my first "film." i have been a photographer/audio engineer, until now :)

What crane did you use btw? Looks nice
  • Ryan Booth plus 1 year ago
hmmm. not sure. i'd have to ask andrew (it's his)...it was a little tricky cause we didn't have a monitor. shoot, playback, shoot, playback :) i definitely don't think one needs a jib, but, in my head the cemetery scene would be significantly enhanced by that one shot. thus, we worked hard to get it in there.

hey Ryan it is a great story line and also amazing visuals... Congrats! However there is a minor continuity mistake where Allison runs out from the house with her father. She normally takes her TeddyBear but on the wide shot, she doesn't have it anymore, and again we see it on the close-up, she has it... :)
  •
  • Congratulations! I agree that this was beautifully written and directed, and that the little girl did very well acting.

I agree with a previous comment...any father seeing his daughter for the first time after being kidnapped wouldn't give a quick little nonchalant hug and move on. He'd grip her like nothing could tear them apart again with tears welling up.

Did anyone notice that Alison had the Teddy Bear in her hand as she exited the apartment, then no Teddy Bear on the way to the car, and then it was in her hand again as she entered it?

Great job overall for your first go! Again, congratulations!
  • Rick Macomber plus 1 year ago
I was going to mention the continuity issue with the teddy bear... but you beat me to it Rosanna. Perhaps there was some hidden reason behind this Ryan? Anyway... kudos for a fine piece of film making - especially with one lens!
  • Scott Lovejoy 1 year ago
"I agree with a previous comment...any father seeing his daughter for the first time after being kidnapped wouldn't give a quick little nonchalant hug and move on."

Am I mistaken to think that when The Cabbie sees her, it isn't right after she had been kidnapped, but right after something else entirely? Unless I viewed it wrong, "how did you do this?" was not in reference to her being kidnapped.
  • Ryan Booth plus 1 year ago
that's correct scott, he had just buried (or thought he buried - up to you!) his daughter and yet there she is, sitting before him...thus he is asking "how did you do this?"
i wish we had more time to display/explore a full arc of emotion that one must feel in that moment. revulsion (how could you play this joke on me!), incredulity (is it really you?), excitement, tenderness (thank you), fear (who are you that you could make this happen)... but, alas, we were working with a time limit and had a lot more ground to cover :)

and good catch on the continuity guys...i'll DEFINITELY have a continuity person on set next time. thanks for being a little forgiving :)

glad you all generally liked the film...

congratulations on the win! I voted for your submission, as I felt that not only was the cinematography great, but it moved the story forward in a wonderful way. Hope to follow in your steps on a future chapter! :D

    Beautiful. Amazing job on this.

Teddy bear disappears from her hand when daughter and dad walk out of the house, eh? :P

And, is that little white dot moving in an arc along the ground reflecting of your camera jib or something? My best guess.

CONTINUITY ERROR - (sorry, had to point it out) if you watch from 2:30, there is a shot of the girl carrying her bear, then in the next shot it's gone, and then it's back again in the on after that.
OTHER COMMENT - Still an awesome video, and thoroughly deserved to win!

Since you apparently haven't watched the others, the acting was on par. Besides, it's not like Tom Sizemore is willing to act in one of these.

And come on, do you really expect a director to negatively comment on the volunteer performances of friends and locals willing to help him out for a competition?

So much negativity from people who haven't even stepped up to the plate. You should never apologize for being an ass. Just don't be an ass.

    omg. Im speechless!!! Awesome!!!

    @airmax95
This is so far the worst type of promoting your profile to other people to see & compare your work w/Ryan, trying 2 b negative it will not work in your benefit.
Just my opinion & Im only a Mobile DJ.

    Very nice !
  •
  • The score that you have chosen to accompany the visuals, haunting and melancholy, yet filled with so much tenderness works perfectly with the narrative. And I feel this really comes across, the tenderness of the piece, never trying too hard, never attempting to force it-self upon the audience.
    good stuff.
  • Ryan Booth plus 1 year ago
    kind words...
i definitely didn't want to force anything on anyone. glad that came across and yeah, i agree, my friend who composed the music did a fabulous job...

  • I didn't understand it. I couldn't tell what parts were flashback sometimes and what parts were current time. Could just be me. Is the building the guy going into the "warehouse" that we saw Alison in in the last Chapter film? I thought you had the cabbie running away with Alison after he was reunited with her instead of taking her back after a week, but then what happened? "They" kidnapped her and he's going to get her at the warehouse? It just doesn't make sense. I watched it a few times trying to figure out what I was missing.
  • ewolistick 1 year ago
yeah men. kinda lost too. it was the teddy bear that throw you off. flash back: allison is carrying a teddy bear that looks like/same color/same size in the current time. its a mistake. He should have used different color/size of teddy bear if he is trying to say that allison loves teddy bear in the flash back. or made a scene that her dad bought it for her in the flash back before they start playing around. Overall it's good! cheers men! just helping you out!!!!

Really well shot and edited, but the acting fell pretty flat for me. Seems like most people on Vimeo focus on the image exclusively, but don't pay attention to the quality of performances they get from their actors.
  • Not me! Real director here!
  •
  • Booth, get r dun. We would all like to know what equipment you used. That's part of the contest. You should put on your page all the equipment used in this film. Love the audio, what boom mic did you use? Real supreme, and the train shots. When cabbie was walking, behind shots and low shots, what kid on stabilizer did you use? Was that a shoulder mount? Were u just holding it low, or was it a glidecam? Of glidecamrealgood job balancing, I can't balance worth of shit.

haha. thanks...it was glidecam...and yeah, i'm shooting a combo "gear+timeline" behind the scenes thing as we speak...
