Seeds of Never-Seen Dreams is a geneagraphical digital story based on my great-grandmother Flora Delcina Hunsley Smith’s life. Composed of family photographs, documents, and quilts, this piece shows how the stories, like the quilts, are part of my inheritance, the legacy of my great-grandmother’s creativity and perseverance despite the hardships of her life. Special thanks to Alice Walker for her influential essay “In Search of Our Mother’s Gardens” and to Rayna Gellert for her haunting recording of the old-time fiddle tune “Sally Coming Through the Rye.” In her liner notes, Rayna writes of a friend’s question, “What was up with Sally?” Seeds of Never-Seen Dreams is my attempt to answer the same question about my great-grandmother.
