music by Samuel Pellman
video by Miranda Raimondi
This brief work was inspired by a Hubble telescope image of the nebula M17 and is a piece of visual music in which the processes for synthesizing the sound and the video footage are closely linked. An extended melody, with many microtonal trills and subtle vibrato effects, is performed by a physical model of an Armenian duduk as the foreground element of m17. This is accompanied by plucked-string drones and bells, similarly modeled on the acoustical properties of real instruments. The pitches of the movement are tuned in 7-limit just intonation and drawn from a Lydian-dominant scale.
