really amazing ! what was your setup ?
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
I used the Canon TC-80N3 to control the 5D2 and use the Canon 24mm 1.4 mk2 along with the Zeiss ZFs lenses 28mm, 35mm, 50mm and a Nikon 80-200mm. I have also been using two 5D2s at the same time to double my shots while out on location.

  • Karl Hab 1 year ago
thanks a lot ! and your shutter speed was low when you took the stars ?
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
For the star shots the shutter was open for 15 seconds and the ISO was set to 3200 for most of the star shots.

I'm wondering how you controlled exposure in the day to night and night to day shots?
This is brilliant stuff, loving it.
    Cheers

    Avey
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
I didn't adjust the exposure at all. The stuff that looks like its going from night to day is being shot when the moon rises. The shots that look like they are going from day to night are being shots well after sunset but there's just enough light in the sky to make it look like day time.

Awesome, dude! A couple of those shots are real masterpieces!

I bet few people would have guessed what that shot down on Yosemite Valley was if the next shot had not revealed it. The shot above Getty was awesome, with all those cross-veins of traffic. Also, several of the very wide shots of LA worked brilliantly.

    Bravo.

The shot at 2:26 above LA was amazing. It was like the city was pulsing.

Outstanding work! I love those two owls in the shot with the oil rig.

Yeah, those owls scared the crap out of me when I was setting up the shot. As they would fly right by me and cry out.

How did the Zeiss rate compared with Canon & Nikon?
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
The Zeiss lenses are built better than the Canon or Nikon lenses. The main thing they lack would be weather seal like the "L" lenses have. But optically I think they look better. If Ziess had a 24mm 1.4 lens I would be rocking that instead of the Canon 24mm 1.4.

Did you use a bulb ramper to increase/ decrease your exposure during the "day to night shots"?
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
No, I just dialed in the settings I wanted the shot to land on and that was it. So the shot starts out bright and then goes down to where I want it to be.

  • alex 1 year ago
Wow this is the best I have seen on here for sure. Please tell me how long will my 7D body shutter last if I try to shoot like this? Also is this kind of timelapse possible on a regular photo lens if the shutter is open for 15 seconds how do you get a fluid motion on roads with stars?
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
Well Canon says that the 7D has a 150,000 shutter durability. So you should be fine for the most part if you wanted to do timelapse. You should have no problem using just a regular lens, whatever that might be, to shoot timelapse. The main problem you might get is flicker if you close the lens down too much. There are ways around it but I would suggest looking that up. If you want to learn more about timelapse check out timescapes.org.
  • alex 1 year ago
Thank you, and last question what about the fluid motion you get here? If the shutter is open for 15 seconds how is it possible to have a very smooth fluid timelapse any special secret about that?

Very solid work Andrew ! I love the owls on the oil rig shot and the yosemite valley floor wow.

Did you use grad nd's for the city shots ? The sky is very clear in some of them.
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
No ND grads. Those really clean shots were just really clear. I shot the timelapse right after a storm passed through. Really the only time the air is that clear in LA.

How do you attain SHARP FOCUS when you are shooting at night?

for instance in your stars shots... in my experience I found it tough to focus on the sky as the stars are usually dim and I usually have to "eyeball it"

how do you attain sharpness when you point at the sky for example. Do you take a couple of exposures first, kind of trial and error type. Or is there a faster way I'm missing out on?
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
I have an eye piece from Zacuto, the Z-Finder, that I share between the two 5D2s that I have. That helps a lot in getting sharp focus. Sometimes I take a couple sample frames and then zoom way up on them in the camera to see how sharp they are. Then I kind of just walk the focus in until its as sharp as it can be.

spectacular work my friend. I think you're ready to introduce motion to your timelapses now. Motion controlled nodal pans, dolly moves, push-ins will take your work to strastosphere and that's where Baraka, Koyaanisqatsi and likes of Planet Eearth are. I expect to see it from you and nothing less.
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
I'm working on building a motion control setup right now. Trying to figure out to either go with CamBlock or just build something simple for right now that will basically do the same job.
  • Beno Saradzic plus 1 year ago
I'm glad you are. My suggestion is to go with a simple solution...for now. Try this for example: bmumford.com/photo/dolly/index.html
    Good luck!
  • Beno Saradzic plus 1 year ago
this'll do the job too but it's much pricier and sophisticated.

    Hello!
First, fantastic time lapse, one of this bests! I have few questions:
    - you shot it on Av/M? all settings "static"? because on Av it flickr (blink), when I use deflickr in VirtualDub it still little flickr, so I think M and all static is needed... I use fisheye 8mm samyang, so I have static f/

BTW: in canon when you have electronic f/, you can click GO look button, and then throw the lens :)

    - #2 question, again about that #1 but when is sunset, you need have Av or change settings, but your video dont blink, why :D

    - #3 question, what color balance you use in city? because it is nice orange, my is always blue or yellow, when I try use some whitebalances buildin 50D

    I have Canon EOS 50D, Samyang 8mm F/3.5 Aspherical IF MC Fish-eye, Canon EF 28mm F/2.8

    Sorry for my english...
  • Kemalettin Sert 1 year ago
    im wondering same questions..
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
My 5D2 never gets switched out of Manual mode as I don't trust the camera to make any adjustments on its own. Its better to just lock everything in. I have never used any of those de-flicker programs and I don't plan on using them.

The reason why my shots don't flicker is because I don't change the iris when the camera is shooting. The other thing that helps is using manual iris lenses like the Zeiss ZFs. They will never flicker. But the Canon 24mm 1.4 mk2 lens I use will if it gets closed down past f5.6.

The color temperature changes to what I need it to be. I try and keep it the way I shot it out in the field but sometimes like looks better cooler or warmer. Try using a program that allows you to pick your color profile when you are processing the shots like After Effects or Lightroom, which takes some extra steps unlike AE.
  • Adam Michał Ziaja 1 year ago
when I use f/8 for example, it still blink, in fisheye 8mm samyang f/ is manual...

so you dont change any settings, all static, but I dont change too and it blink.. :(

"I use will if it gets closed down past f5.6."
    so f/4 etc or f/8 etc?:P

RAW format in 50D take 20MB and I have card only 8gb :
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
I have never used the lens you are talking about so I don't really know how it works. But from the looks of it the lens still might cause flicker if it works like the electronic iris Nikon lenses to. I believe that there's still some sort of communication between the lens you are using and the camera. I could be wrong. The only other thing is that you have some part of the camera still in auto. Could be the shutter or ISO.

The idea with most lenses is that they have a more consistent iris at the larger apertures. Meaning f5.6 and greater. Also when I talk about greater apertures or iris values I'm talking about the iris being larger which allows in more light. So a f1.4 is larger than f5.6. The higher the number the more closed the iris is.

I would suggest you getting some bigger cards. I'm shooting on some 32GB CF cards that aren't very fast but they do the job I need them to do.
  • Adam Michał Ziaja 1 year ago
ok, all manual on 99,99% will not flickr, but how you do sunset :D? I always do it on Av, or also can be Av with auto ISO to night and then switch on static (M) and should not flickr too hmm :)

btw: I am waiting for your new movie :P
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
For the sunset shots I did I just waited until the light was right so when it faded away I would be at the correct exposure I wanted to be at.

I should have the next timelapse up in a month or so. Plus I'm working on getting a 85-90 minute feature put together. But that's going to take some time to put together.

Why do you find the ZF lenses preferable to the ZE lenses? please explain..

    thnks
  • Andrew Walker plus 1 year ago
Well I use the Zeiss ZFs on my RED MX camera right now along with my 5D2s for timelapse. The ZE would give you more chances for flicker to get in the shots as they have an electronic iris.
