Film producer Steve Nguyen profiles Mike Song from the Kaba Modern Legacy dance group.
As a child growing up in Torrance, California, Mike Song had lofty aspirations of becoming a jedi master. When that career plan didn’t pan out, he focused his attention on the most logical substitute: dancing. At first, he only displayed his moves at church alleys, radio show contests, and whenever he was on the losing end of a bet. However, when he entered the University of California, Irvine in 2004 to study Economics, Mike joined Kaba Modern, an event which would forever change his life.
In 2007, Mike became one of three co-coordinators of Kaba Modern. It was during his year of leadership that Kaba Modern won 1st Place in the USA and 2nd Place in the World at Hip Hop International. It was also later that year that Mike went on to represent KM in the first season of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. Since then, he has traveled extensively (both domestically and internationally), to perform, teach, and hopefully, inspire others to dance and promote positivity.
Mike has judged and battled at various dance events. In 2007, Mike won 1st place at the Annual In the Spotlight battle in Southern California. Mike was a hip-hop instructor at UC Irvine’s ARC and is currently a resident instructor at Jimmy DeFore Dance Center in Costa Mesa, CA. Mike has taught internationally in countries like Guam, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Hawaii, South Africa, and continues to travel and teach around the world.
